hi, i am very new to guinea pig care, but doing ok so far with my 2 little boys :) however, i have been giving them some fresh fruit and veg every day, varying in variety. so far they have had; carrot, apple, baby and big corn, spring cabbage and parsley. i feel slightly nervous to know what else to give them. when i bought them from pets at home they advised me not to give them red pepper, cucumber or lettuce as these all contain too much water and can upset their stomach. reading on here, people appear to give their piggies cucumber etc so i assume its ok and my advice was wrong ? i was also surprised to read that they can have watercress ! could anyone give me any ideas as to what else to give them to try that piggies love and also advise me as to what they definately can never have as it might make them ill. thanks so much for any help.

Welcome to the family Samantha

What you have gave them so far is absolutely fine though obviously as they are just ickle babies don't over do it as their stomachs will be delicate :)

Cucmber and red pepper are fine, lettuce is ok but in very small amounts as it can be a laxative to them.

We also giove ours celery, brocolli, cauliflower, spinach (but only very occasionally as it acts as a sedative). We also give apple though again that is in small amounts as it can sometimes cause mouth ulcers because of the acid in the apple, banaa too though they find that a bit mushy to handle :)), melon

big no no's are onions and potatoes

hope this helps

Karen :)

Here's another good one http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=37030
It's iceberg lettuce that they shouldn't have but other varieties such as Cos or Romaine are fine. Try stopping my boys having cucumber!
Pepper's fine in moderation as it's very high in Vitiman C - good for poorly pigs.

Have fun discovering what they like!

thats great - thanks for all your help and ideas ! they turned their noses up at cucumber and red pepper :( but they loved the oats they had today :). will keep trying new things so they have plenty of variety but will do so slowly so as to avoid an upset tummy !

Sometimes you have to offer a new food a few times before it's accepted, although not all pigs like all things. :)

I agree. Gilbert absolutely ignored broccoli the first time I introduced it to him. Now he loves it - after I tried giving it to him a couple of times.

One of mine used to love porridge (made with water) but the other hated it :D
