Hey guys, sorry I've been asking so many questions but I'm pretty concerned about this one. My rat has seemed to develop a sever URI. It was sudden and we don't have any emergency vet near us that treat rodents. We have a great exotic vet that I'll be rushing to in the morning, but for now, should I be concerned about my guinea pig that lives in the same room? I have two other guinea pigs that are in quarantine for another week. Glad they're not close, but worried about my boy. There was another thread about this already posted, but at that time no one really knew. Just checking if anyone might know for sure.

My impression is it would depend on the bacteria in question. Some bacteria are more likely to be transmitted across species than others. Since there's really no way to know for sure, I would separate them as much as I possibly could. I hope your rat is okay and your pig manages to avoid catching it!

I agree with Freela.

Fingers crossed for your poorly rat!

Thanks guys. Unfortunately my vet told me it was best to go ahead and put her down. The infection was too advanced and Prim was too old to put her through treatment :( thankfully he doesn't think the guinra pigs will be affected at all. He just suggested we keep being careful. Sad day though, we'll miss her

I'm so sorry that you had to make that decision for Prim. What a tough day for you. Hugs xx

Thank you <3 It wasn't easy but knowing that I was giving her a peaceful end rather than a painful one helped :)

I'm so sorry about Prim. Rats really are sweet. It's never an easy decision to have to make. ((HUGS.))
