i really want to get my Joey a friend problem is I'm petrified to get him neutered due to the fact ive lost 2 Guinea Pigs under aneasthetic in the past and would litrally fall to pieces if the same thing happened to Joey. so i was thinking of maybe getting another Boar to bond with him how easy or how hard will this be? i was thinking of maybe getting a baby boar to make it easier but abit scared incase Joey bullies him :(

they are easy to bond as long as as the new boar has not reach sexual maturity, and you need to introduce, them on mutual ground, it really is easy peasy it is just a long process, And you can rescue babies as well

We have two sets of bonded boars - both older boars had 6-8 week old babies introduced to them. As piggybaker says find some neutral territory and have lots of things to interest them, but make sure you have two of everything! Be prepared for some chasing and mounting but it's all normal. The barmy4boars website is definitely worth a look, some lovely piggies and fab info. Good luck and I hope you find your little guy a friend shortly.

Hi Quavers. I'm sorry to hear you lost 2 piggies under anaesthetic. I know what its like as I lost a chinchilla the same way :'(

As for bonding boars yes it can be done. If you contact a rescue center you can arrange to take your Joey along so they can help with the introduction & see if he takes to any one in particular. If you go for a baby it needs to be a young baby about 6 weeks old.

It is possible to introduce two adult boars too. My Murran is 4 now and when his friend Frank died in April we wondered what to do for the best. On Saturday we took Murran along to a rescue & he was introduced to Gilbert & they immediately hit it off! We sterilized the cage with baby sterilizing solution, bought them both home in the same carry case & put them straight in together! I wondered if it would continue to go well & it has! There has been no trouble at all. :)

Of course it depends on the personality of the pigs. My Murran is a laid back boy & so is Gilbert so neither is worried about being top pig it seems.

Good Luck & let us know what you decide to do & how it goes O0

I have had success at bonding boars, but I have also had failures.

I have had a long standing pair of boars for a couple of years now. (Toffee & Ginger)

I tried to bond another pair and whilst initially all was well, eventually they had to be separated. (Skip & Jeff)

I then tried to bond another pair and the same thing happened. (Percy & Sid)

I have over the last couple of weeks been attempting to bond Skip and Sid. These were the ones in each pair that were bullied by the others. I tried them in a run and have not looked back since. Its as though they have always been together. They have an initial run around and then settle down to a nibble of the grass. They act exactly the same as my original pair. They are now living together and so far so good. Keeping all my fingers crossed.

As for Jeff and Percy, I am keeping these as singles for the time being.

As has already been said, the personality of the piggies also has some bearing on the situation.

Good luck.

yes it is possible although i have never managed it i have mine semi bonded which means they are quite happy to play together but won't share anything so that means 2 sets of toys 2 hutches and 2 food bowls fdon't know why they won't share but they won't but theyll happily share a run together as long as the bowls are at opposite ends piggies eh ::)

glad to hear you can bond 2 boars ;D i hope to get one soon i will deffinatly look into adopting though ;)

I have got a boar who is nearly 7 years old bonded with a 5 month old.

We introduced them gradually, on neutral territory each time, over the course of about a week.

Their really friendly with one another and have never fought.
