I managed unintentionally to change policy of the Canadian SPCA about rehoming guinea pigs and rabbits so it can be done!

Just caught up with this thread....... I just hope the rabbit doesn't go for jags and doesn't come back, god knows who's hands it could end up in but it would have to be better than the school. How stupid to teach kids something so simple. I was shocked at the number of kids Library books on guinea pigs that stated they could live with rabbits. xx

adult guinea pig books still say a rabbit and guinea pig can live together. i am sorry i misread the part about the rescue place saying the school was not acceptable for a rescue pig. i think (don't shoot me down) that it is important for the kids to have a pet at school, it teaches responsiblity, and a lot of children aren't allowed pets at home. but it would help if the teachers knew what they were doing first. some kids like me were/are abused and find it hard to get on with people but with animals it is different and they can find love and peace with the animal/s.
am hoping you sort this out but what ever you do make sure the animal that goes goes to a good home! sending you hugs and good vibes :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:
 
absolutely disgusting they aren't listening to you, totally typical of some schools I'm afraid ::) I only hope the vet doesn't give it the ok, as the school will likely come back and say "The vet says it alright, they're the professional, so we'll listen to them"

And we all know what a lot of vets are like ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) >:(

I managed to sneak a look inside the hutch this morning and the little piggy is still in with the bunny :-\ He/she's lovely probably about 8-10 weeks old.
The Headmaster has been in meeting on and off all day and I am just so annoyed cos I left a message for him to phone me and let me know whether he has made a decision yet and guess what he hasn't :( I went to speak to him after school and he was in his office with someone.
If he does not let me know what he's doing by tomorrow I'm gonna go bananas - I was nearly crying in the playground today when one of the teachers said he was in a meeting - I feel like it just not a priority to him :(
I had a phonecall from the lady from the education dept. apparently there are no policies as such about the schools having pets, but she had shown an obvious interest about what I had told her and said she had done a search on it and I was right with my concerns.
So what I have decided to do tomorrow is contact the R.S.P.C.A again and ask them to go and pay him a visit, I'm also gonna print of another copy of the link Boureki showed me and I'm gonna type up a petition tonight and show every parent the info that walks through the school gate tomorrow and ask them to sign the petition - and If he still dosen't budge then I'm going straight to the local papers >:D >:D >:D
What I will do also is ask anyone who can to add appropriate comments in a seperate thread try not to sware to much! and I will print it off and give it to him with the petition O0

I would urge caution though, what you are doing is great but they may turn funny against your daughter schools are funny like that! :-\
 
Yes Louise I agree with, be careful with the school, I did a letter regarding an issue with my daughters infant school and her life at the school for the remaing year was terrible.....but i am like you ...go for it and i hope you get somewhere...poor gp and rabbit

Bethany sounds lovely. I would keep on the pressure with the education. I really think that schools are no place for a rabbit. I've mentioned Domino before my heart breaks for her. She is in a plastic hutch in a shed it's no bigger than 3x1.5 no room to periscope or run about. Emily never talks about her because she never sees her.

I can't understand why schools have pets at all. In the school nursery they have fish and it just went to murk. My Dad is the caretaker and he can't clean it out as there is too much to do in the school. It is just so annoying especially when people won't listen!
 
I do not think any school should have any animals....who looks after them at night...well later afternoon ...school staff go home before evening....it is not fair

i hope things turn out for you and your daughter concerning the bunny and guinea pig, maybe i am wrong but i would have thought pets would have been good for schools like i said for those who can't have pets at home or been abused or are bullied or lonely pets are a great comfort and they teach respondsiblities and love. i know pets were a comfort to me growing up. good luck and keep us posted.
