Castration, Should They Eat?

I'll ring the vets tomorrow and try get an appointment for after work. Won't be able to get anyone to feed them during the day, as everyone will be at work.
But I can try pop home during my lunch at half 12 but I won't be able to syringe feed them as I only have half hour which isn't enough time :( but maybe I could throw in some veg for them to nibble on whilst I'm out?

So I tried to syringe feed him and I got literally 1ml down him that's all :( and that's by black mailing him with grapes! This may seem abit cruel, but I just removed his bed from his cage and he started eating, I'm not sure why? But I'm going to sit here and not put the bed back until he stops eating. He's actually munching away at some muesli (I have nuggets as well I'm just trying both to tempt him at the moment). Is this unfair?

He also peed on my bed! lol I haven't syringe fed biscuit because I have seen him munching on some hay, so I won't stress him. But I'll deffo give him some in the morning

He's eating nuggets! All because I removed his bed? I don't want to jinx it but is this a strategy?! Never heard of this before.

I have come across similar before with mine! I guess just like us, a snuggle in bed is tempting when u feel rough and if u are up, u might as well eat. Anyway, the main thing is that he is eating something. How are they doing this morning?
Hope u can visit them in the day to tempt them with fresh hay and veg/ grass. And yes get onto the vet about the pain killer regime. They just don't seem to have their pain under control yet. But remember, the pain and swelling post op will / should be reducing with each day post op. It is just that piggies need their guts to keep going so keep monitoring the poos and let you vet know what u need cc wise. Come on boys.

Skinny pigs on youtube takes her elderly piggies bed away every day for a bit so that the piggy will come out and eat and drink. Hope your boys get well soon.

I've just popped home for lunch and quickly removed their beds. Ill be leaving again in 5 minutes but I'll give some veg in there for then, I did see them nibbling on some hay when I kicked them out their beds so hopefully.

I also have a vet appointment with he woman who did the surgery at ten to six today. She is their usual vet as well, fingers crossed, but I'm not quite sure what else we can do :(

well done ,you are doing very well.it has been a difficult time.ask the vet to weight them both.increase pain relief as not eating enough probably due to pain and inflammation of the wound.x

Thank you Eileen :) it really helps to have people be so kind and give reassurance.
Biscuit and buttons are back from the vets, vet has said they are already on maximum dose and that they can't have any more loxicom, but she gave them some more mls in gut stimulant. And some emeraid instead of the critical care I was using, I just syringed buttons (the wiggly one) and he accepted the emeraid much more than the oxbow critical care! So fingers crossed this is onwards and upwards ! I really need it to be x

A previous picture attached of them all snug in their corner cosies! just to make me smile x

ah!they both look so chilled there.Emerald is good,it has more calories than cc,mine loved it.what dose of metacam are they both on?It will be all worth it if you see them with wives,or do you plan to keep them as they are?ive just had 3 of my boars neutered six weeks ago,one had a uti(urinary tract infection)now has ear infection with head tilt, but he will be fine, just got remains of head tilt.ive placed him with a sow,he is much more settled. His mate was trying his luck,so he will be paired up with a boar .

I'm glad it has more calories as the vet did say they had lost a little bit of weight! Need to plump them back up! Biscuit and buttons live seperatly because get kept fighting so I will be pairing them with wives each when they are all better and past the 6 weeks :) how did you no that he had a uti? buttons looks a little more active now, but still not eating! If he doesn't eat I'll remove his bed at 10 and hopefully he will have a little munch!

Biscuit is on 0.45ml of Loxicom, and buttons is on 0.35ml of Loxicom.

I've just read up about emeraid, and it says that it should be mixed with HOT water?! I did it with cold earlier! the vet didn't tell me it was any different to the oxbow.

Do I really have to do hot? I don't think pigs would like it!

I do too :) Mix it with warm water but let it cool before giving. It is very expensive stuff from what I remember, but you don't need to give quite as much as Critical Care.

I have started mixing it with warm tap water :) buttons likes the emeraid MUCH better than the oxbow! It's actually crazy how much he accepts it more (lesson learnt!) buttons poos seem better today, although not back to their usual characters yet I'm hoping they are getting better. I weighed them today at the vets Monday and again today..

Monday 24th weights-

Buttons-1.06kg
Biscuit -1.18kg

Tuesday 25th weights-

Buttons- 1.07kg
Biscuit- 1.19kg

Is this a good improvement? Do you think I should be syringe feeding them more? i mean that is only a day, but I did it after I had syringed them.

I've noticed that buttons and Biscuit have started sqeeking when going for a poop, last couple days I have upt their dose to 1ml of metaclopromide twice a day (as told to do so by the vet) just wondering whether you think this has anything to do with it? Poops are looking good, but there like squeaking/ squeeling in pain?! especially buttons

Could be an impaction or an abscess brewing?
How does his bottom and wound are look?
Is he on antibiotics?
When is he next due back at the vets for a check up?

I think it could be abscess / swelling. As I checked their wounds this morning and buttons testicle sack looks like there's a testicle in there! And I noticed little specks of blood when I was syringing him :( they were both whimpering all night. How will the vet deal with this? Attached is the photo.

It sounds like they both need to see the vet again asap.
If they are already on pain medication but still clearly in pain, then something is wrong.
I am so sorry this is so complicated, but you really need to get them back to the vet.
If it is an abscess they will need antibiotics and you will need to keep the wound open and flush it daily ( the vet will go through how to do this with you).

Good luck and don't forget to let us know how you get on. I hope the boys feel better soon.

Oh no how terrible for you. Having Tyrone neutered has really put me off having elective done again. Lots on this site have neuters go so smoothly. Luckily my vets were all for pain relief through everything he went through and Tyrone never went off his food or pooping. I really hope you get them sorted today, such a worry and not nice for your boys xx

Hi all,
The vet has been in contact with me and I have sent pictures, she did not want me to bring them down as she was worried it will stress them as they have been to the vets so much in the last few days,
However she has left at the vets some antibiotics and has asked me to update her by email, and then with pictures again on Friday. She said if it doesn't getting better then to come back again.

They are on pain meds already but they can't have anymore because they have full dose, so I don't no what to do with regards to their pain :( :(

Both of them really should be on a course of Zithromax & possibly Tramodol as well as Metacam if it isn't giving them enough pain relief. The swelling is probably caused by post-op oedema (fluid swelling) which can be normal but the fluid is usually reabsorbed by the body fairly quickly usually it only takes a couple of days for the swelling to go right down. The blood spots could mean he has broken one of his stitches. Please keep a very very close eye on him to see if he is nibbling them as it will need immediate vet attention if he chews them away.

What are those medications used for?
The vet has prescribed me with septrim at 0.66ml for buttons and slightly more for biscuit as he is bigger. And they are on loxicom still, with probiotic (bio lapis) and metaclopromide, as well as syringe feeding emeraid! I was told that loxicom is the same as metacam.

They are only whimpering when they are pooing and wee-img it's so distressing for them, and me when I hear it!

Do you have any idea what the lumps could be? In the pictures I attached. They are really random and hard, are they abscesses? but they aren't open or anything.

Thanks for your help x

Metacam/Loxicom is fine, if they are still having pain when pooping then a low dose of Tramodol could help, it is a different type of pain relief & can be used in addition to Loxicom. Zithromax is an excellent antibiotic that works very well on soft tissue abscesses etc. Septrin is ok at least it's better than Baytril which can cause tummy issues. Hopefully it will do the job although it might take longer than Zithromax would. Are they eating hay/pellets or veggies yet?

I am so sorry that you are having such a tough time with your boys. How really tough for you.

I hope they perk up soon and that you are able to get them some more pain relief.

Thank you both x
Biscuits appetite has improved loads and he has been eating his hay and stuff quite allt which is great, buttons not so much but definitely has more of an appetite than before. His is mainly during the day when the painkiller is fresh in his system. Poops are looking better so far.

I'll keep a note of that tranadol and mention it to the vet when I go there next x
