Castration, Should They Eat?

The lump on buttons has got bigger this morning :( I'm so scared it will pop! Then what do I do x

As Poppy's mum suggested, your pigs really need to be on Zithromax and Tramadol, as well as the Loxicom. Please contact your vet as soon as possible and ask if you can change the medication to these.
 
This is what the vet has said to me:
Is Zithromax an antibiotic injection? As if so, then I think they have it it before.

Zithromax is given orally; it comes in powder form and is usually mixed with water at the vets to make a syrup for syringing. The correct dosage is 0.1 ml per 100g of body weight.

The abscess my require lancing and regular flushing to allow it heal from the inside out and to remove any infection while it does so.
 
I'm not 100% sure if it's an abscess as the vet said in the email it could be knots of suture material, I have just come home for lunch to see if he's okay and it hasn't got any bigger and they were out eating.
Buttons also had an operation to remove a fatty lump ironically where the lump now is! So I'm hoping that is also suture material?! I'm not sure how to tell a difference between an abscess or suture material?

Hi all
Just came back from the vets and they had a feel around the lump and they are convinced it's a reaction to the suture material they used in surgery. They said they don't think it is an abscess because it's not squidgy, it's solid. However I couldn't see my usual vet, so I'm going to email her pictures of the lump tonight, I mentioned the tramadol and the other antibiotic but they said that it's very very strong and they would want to keep him over night to watch him if he was on it, which personally I think will stress him way more than the pain he is in. So she said I need to keep an eye and if it gets bigger by tomorrow morning then I need to go to another appointment which she has pre-booked for me tomorrow x
 
They have also advised me to split the loxicom into two half doses to see if that helps with the pain relief lasting longer x
 
Fingers crossed!

PS: As guinea pigs have a very fast metabolism, it is always good to split a daily dosage.
 
Zithromax is a strong antibiotic but is really good for soft tissue problems. I would see what they say tomorrow, if you are still not happy with the care he is getting then if it is possible can you take him to see Simon Maddock at the Cat & Rabbit Clinic in Northampton, he really is the best piggy vet for abscesses, if it is one.
 
@Kirsty You're doing a fantastic job, well done for being so observant and acting on what you see.

From the photos I think that I could agree with the vet about it being suture material, but you never know.

When I'm checking for problems I'll try to very carefully touch the wound or hold my hand close. Infections can feel warm. Also any redness, and the stitches being pulled is a sign. And getting in and having a sniff can be a good sign of spotting an infection or abscess brewing.

I've noticed that they can sometimes get a bit nippy if they're sore around their wounds. I had a lovely boar but he got quite vicious when he started to get an infection in his neutering site. It looked completely fine but he kept on biting me. A day later he removed his stitches and he had an infection. So watch his behaviour too, they can get fussy when they're sore.

The Septrin will be a good helper in trying to battle, or keep any infection away.

Just keep doing as you're doing. Checking and updating your vet if you see any problems.

Just feel that I got him into this mess by putting him through the op so I must do everything in my power to get them better again ☹️

Fingers crossed, I will update as and when anything changes, I just gave Buttons a piece of apple as a peace offering and he is enjoying it x
 
You only ever had his best interests to heart. None of this has been caused by you. And you'll do everything you possibky can to help him

I'm sorry this is still ongoing,the splitting of the dose is much better for there pain.i agree with @Poppy'sMum ,if you are not happy with your vets,the Cat and Rabbit clinic are fab,but I'm not sure if you are able to travel.have you used the vet locator at the top,as all recommendations are piggy savvy vets.ive two foster boys that were neutered yesterday,so I'm observing them closely,but both are eating and running around,only done tuesday,maybe ask what suture material the vet used,as one is much better than the rest .Ihope you seen an improvement.Just watch the swellings reduce and not get bigger.you are coping very well.xx
 
It's not your fault at all, you are a very caring piggy owner who has asked questions here & been back & forth to your vet to try & get some answers/reassurance that's all. It is sad when we put our faith & trust in vets because we assume they know far more than we do about our pets, sometimes some vets aren't as knowledgeable about small furries as others, that's all :)
 
Yep I can travel, I'm going to see this through with my vet until Monday, if there is no improvement or any signs of them deteriating then I will take them to the one in Northampton you suggested for definite!
 
i feel for you,I'm so glad ive not encountered any problems,ive always travelled further afield to go to a good trusted vet that neuters guinea pigs regularly and has a good record of few problems.But it can happen even with the best vets,just minimises the risks .you are very level headed,you are doing better than i would have done if my first neuters had not been straight forward.:tu:
 
AHHH EVERYONE HELP I might have just made a huge mistake

So I've been splitting buttons 0.35ml dosage in half to see if lasts a little longer.

So I gave him half, and that went in. Then I used the same syringe to soak up some probiotic and put that in his mouth (he loves the taste of the probiotic) then I thought crap, there would have been some loxicom in the tip of the syringe which is always that extra bit that you can't get it. So does that mean he has had well over his dosage?!?! I'm so scared just in case I've gave him too much. He had the other half of the dose at 7.15am this morning, is he going to be ok?!

Don't panic, They should be fine even if they have had slightly more loxicom than prescribed x
 
@Kirsty He'll be fine. I've had a pig who had 0.25ml twice a day so the dose Buttons had isn't very high. A little bit more than his prescribed dose won't hurt him.

Well done for checking though!
 
Oh thank goddess for that! I really did worry myself sick, started shaking the lot! I could tell that the half dose was starting to wear off around 6oclock so hopefully by giving them the other half now, will perk them back up for the evening! Fingers crossed x
 
So I gave my pigs their half dose of loxicom at 7.30am and there still whimpering when they go to the toilet? Normally I wouldn't notice this as I'm at work, and don't usually notice them whimper until around 6oclock again.

How long does Loxicom take to start givin effective pain relief?

It's quite strange because biscuit is now eating so I'm assuming his pain is more under control. But buttons who got it at the same time is still crying, but when I come home usually after work around 4pm Biscuit is the one that is whimpering and buttons is chirpier. I wonder if they just absorb the pain relief differently?
 
It could be that he needs a higher dose or his body takes longer to absorb it.

My Jon has a digestive issue and part of that is that his digestive system moves faster and so he doesn't absorb nutrients as effectively as other pigs.

From that I would think it's logical that not all pigs will react the same.

But, if you think he's suffering please give the vet a call to see if you can increase his dose a little.
 
I have already asked the vet to increase his dose and she said no because he's on maximum dose :(
 
ive been giving Lewis 0.2 mls 12 hourly after his castration and wee infection.try not too worry ! He is not on a high dose.xx
 
I can't believe you are still having this after 9 days. Poor you and your poor piggies. Something isn't right x
