My guine apig Spiek has become quite lethargic, I noticed his eyes were a little weepy and he just wasn't himself. He also seems to have trouble pooping, and he's been sorta impacted which I've been clearing, the thing is there's no dirt or anything clogging him up, no stray hay strands stuck up there its just poop, he's only 3 years old so I'm thinking he's a bit young to be gettig impacted, so I wondering it anyone knew what caused it.

He's eating well, and everything. This has happened before, exact same symptoms and the vet said it was eye infection, I didn't think it was because his eyes weren;t that weepy, they weren't like crusted together or anything. But he was prescribed some antibacterial eyedrops for a week and after that he was fine.

Hi

Sorry to hear your piggy isn't well. Older boars can get impacted, and some are more prone to it than others, but if his eyes are weepy too then I'd be worried these were symptoms of something else.

Is he eating ok? After you clear his bottom, does he have any normally formed poohs behind the impaction? Any normal poohs in his cage?

Hi! Sorry to hear about your piggy's troubles.

I've only ever had boars & out of the boys I've had, 3 have had impaction. One started when he was about 5 years old, although he also had many other problems (& is no longer with us).

The other 2 boys who have impaction are still with me. One started at 4 years old & the other is starting at 2.5 years old, although it doesn't seem as severe as with the older pig - yet. I think it is one of those things which can happen & the only thing to do is keep the pouch as clean as possible. It is possible for the poo to become mouldy, which must be horrible for the pig. :(

I empty their pouches at least once a day & clean it when required. That way the boys are kept healthy & happy, although I am not the most popular person in the world when fiddling with their personal areas! grrrr Hugs & strokes alwasy seem to work wonders afterwards though! ^)

Like Sophie said if he has weepy eyes also it sounds like it could be the start of an infection. If he's lethargic then maybe he's feeling too ill to clean his eyes/anal area. I think I'd probably pop him to the vets for a once over.

He seems better, walking around more now, his eyes are clearing up a bit I've been cleaning his bum twice a day and that seems to be doing the trick. I also saw himc leaning himself today, and he was removing some poos on his own but I'm still cleaning him, so I'm not sure what was wrong with him but he's a lot better now o.O

It's good to hear he's doing better & that you are obviously doing a good job helping him out! He's a lucky piggy to have a caring mum!
