What is your opinion on this?
Whilst my boys are technically called Ollie and Elliot, those names are only used at the vets. We have actually only ever called them Ginger and Squeaky/The Poo Monster/Sir Digby Chicken Caesar. So I'm considering making those names "official". Ollie would become Ginger, and Elliot would become Sir Digby Chicken Caesar, Digby for short.

However, even though we call them by these "new" names all the time anyway, I still feel like it would be morally wrong to mess with their "original" names. rolleyes

Have you ever changed the name of a pig that you named yourself in the first place? ?/

Yup. Mette-Marit got a new name. Her old one "Fjant" which translates to "Chicken" didn't seem right... She was and still is a skittish scaredy pig, but I thought maybe the name had something little to do with that... so she got a princss one instead!

I know its bad luck to change a horses name not sure about piggies :)) I have nicknames for all my piggies dont actually i think i call any of my animals by their proper names ! x

I have renamed piggies when a name didn't stick:

Daisy became dizzy Daisy and then Dizzy.
Tegan ("little beauty" ) was changed to Telyn ("the harp" ).
Brolly was first named Briallen ("primrose" ), but is was too uncomfy to say for me, so she ended up being MY "chicken" Ffowlyn.
Llewelyn is only being called Llewi or Llewi-boy in this house!

So go for it - if you wish to keep the old names for the sake of the vet, just add the regular ones! Ginger Ollie and Sir Digby Elliot

Yep I've changed a few too. Sometimes when you've had them a little while and their characters surface their original name dosen't seem to suit them.

Mind you alot of my animals have nicknames - my basset Stanley, is know as 'Boose' - cant exactly remember how he got the name 'Boose' but it seems to have stuck.................rolleyes

My guineas go through name changing stages, whether I like it or not, it seems to happen organically.

Bertie became Bertram and now he is plain Tram. Or King Tram.
Virginia is Ginny or Ginster.
One has changed wildly. Copernicus Nutkin became Nutkin, then Nutbagger, and has now been Bagginan for nearly two years. I even take these names to the vets now. They rarely ask me to explain any names except the most ludicrous. I feel like if I had to leave them at the vets overnight that at least they would be hearing their own names. Even if they don't actually recognise their names, it makes me feel better :)

I've only renamed one piggie we adopted from Rizzo to Pepper. Though I tend to just baby talk to them rather then say their names rolleyes so they get darling, gorgeous, piggies ( if I'm talking to them in a group ) then when I talk to Sam/the boys I normally call them my handsome boy or my gorgeous boys :))

I adopted Connie and kept her name as it was.
Eliza was named by us which we have kept, however, she is often called Liz, Lizzy, Lizzy Lou.
Eleanor was known as 'Lilac Girl' when she was in rescue but we renamed her Eleanor. She is more known as Ellie though.
Erin was called Betsy when we adopted her but we renamed her Erin to go with the E theme.
Ena was called Sophie when we adopted her but we renamed her Ena, again to go with the E theme.

I don't think there is anything wrong with changing a pigs name and you should choose a name that suits you and your pig(s) :)

I have changed piggies names if I felt they didn't suit them.

I think its fine, especially when they are still young and will be with you for the rest of their lives. No point spending 4 years+ using a name you don't like or doesn't suit them.

We changed a one year old (approx) piggies name from Duffy to Milly. It took about a month before we could see obvious signs that she recognised it as ger name. That is to say, a word relating to her alone. I'm not sure if piggies understanding of human sounds go beyond that when it comes to names anyway :)

My current two piggies' names are the same everywhere, but before that I had Sukie, who was always called Snow by us here, and Rosie, who was called Pooky! :))

name changes

My boys were adopted from a rescue as Norman and Kirby which didn't suit them at all so I changed their names to Merry & Pippin but they get called all sorts of things at home..

Merrypip, Pippy, Pipster, Merryboy etc etc.

The vet has Merry on their records as Mary! (even though he's a boar - something to do with how I pronounce it in my scottish accent and being in Wolverhampton)

I seriously considered changing my hamsters name a while back from Pippin to Charlie Bear as it would of really suited him but when it came down to it it just didn't seem right to change it, he's now known as Pippin Tittlemouse.

When i adopt new piggies i always change there original name. New home new name! The only one ive ever kept was Terry cos it suits him!

Emily was amy, Bilbo was fluff and david was rambo!

I wouldnt change there names again tho cos they seem to know what there names are! David in particular! If i shout "DAVID" he jumps on top of his house and shouts back haha! My mum didnt belive me until i demonstrated the other day!

I havnt changed any of my pigglies names. But I change the way I say them. Boofle gets called Boofie, Bumble gets called bumblieboo, and Plop gets called Ploppie.lol

we reanamed rocky P@H had named him mr bossy on acount of his bullying antics (no wonder no-one anted him) so we called him rocky rockstar or rocky for short

I've renamed 2 of my piggies! My first sow, Miss Missy was originally Patches but I changed that after a few days. Woog was originally Hershey, and I renamed her about a year after I bought her! Hershey did not suit her at all! :))

When I got 3 of mine they were called Sugar, Sweet and Candy. I didnt know which had which name so I renamed them Toffee, Cookie and Candy - so I kept one name but will never know if it was on the right piggy or not....I could've confused them further doing that lol..... but they didnt seem to mind :))
x

New start, new name here at the rescue, very, very rare for me to keep a name including when I did horse rescue. Only one that kept her name was a registered welsh mare that was 23 when she came in and had been called Lollipop her whole life. Especially as you get sooooooo many with the same name, you'd loose track, there are also so many common names for certain colours/hair types/breeds.

havent "officially" changed my pigs names but:
George is usually called "Fuzz" (because he has a crest on his head)
Roger is usually called "Podgy" (Roger Podge, turned into Podgy)
Piglet is closest to his name, "Pigluuuute" (everyone who hears it thinks I'm bonkers lol)

I don't think it matters at all. I work at the Cats Protection and we change cats names all the time!

My own pigs have all had their names changed when I adopted them - Wallace & Darwin were Eric & Ernie and then something else before that.

My young boar Alvin was called Leon and his wife Peppa was called Swizzle...but like many others they end up been called allsorts of things.

Wallce - Wal, Wally, big head (he does have a large head)
Darwin - Darwinian ...then collectively these are 'the boys', or the chaps, lads, handsome boys...the list goes on :))

Peppa - Peppa pig, pepsi, pepsi pig, pepple
Alvin - Al, little man....collectively these two are known as 'the couple'

Sounds mad doesn't it :(|)
