We have more babies!

Modron has given birth to two perfectly sized baby boys yesterday.

A first glimpse of the newborns that were cleaned up but still a bit damp from birth when I turned up with breakfast.

It is always rather nerve-wracking to wait for a birth, especially at the end and such a relief when all goes well. Both boys are a perfect birth weight at 104g and 107g respectively, the milk bar is working fine and the boys are now dashing around the cage in between naps and drinks. Modron is an experienced mother. Blodyn has been popcorning with the baby boys; she's a happy bunny having playmates again - sadly not for very long. I'd hoped for a little girlfriend for her...

When I offered to adopt the whole dumped family living rough in some waste land and rescued by @Bill & Ted , I was well aware that odds were high that Modron was also pregnant again although she didn't not show yet. She did have some fairly sizeable kicks on her arrival day here but it has taken another three weeks for the pups to make an appearance.
The rescue was happy to make an exception due to my own experience with pregnancies/babies - practical as well as my long term record of forum support. It is of course always nice to get confirmation that the advice you are giving to others does really work.
After all my recent losses, I must admit that little babies are a magical mood lifter!

A snap of the two boys during a quick health and gender check and a first weigh-in in the evening while Modron was having her dinner. By that time they had started to be out and about and to explore their new world. They are so tiny!

Aww congratulations! What beautiful boys!
Clearly all the fabulous work you and the rescue had put in with Mum had paid off to have such healthy weighing babies! ❤️

Unlike her daughter Millyn (who is still much smaller and thinner than she should be), Modron has been able to spend most of her pregnancy in good care, and that makes such a huge difference. She must have fallen pregnant not that many weeks before her rescue.

But now that I no longer have to be circumspect about ensuring as safe a birth and as healthy new-borns as I can influence with a good general diet and care (both in quantity and quality), I can be more generous with the veg and pellets for the next month and can concentrate on allowing all three sows to make up for lost ground/Modron not losing any while she is nursing her boys.

Especially Millyn and Blodyn, who have been most affected by the dumping ordeal, are young enough to catch up over the coming months. Modron has thankfully had those precious initial weeks in the rescue where her body could tank up before the extra pregnancy burden has grown.

I agree, babies are the best cure for my grieving overload. It's such a pity that they grow up so quickly! But I am determined to make the best of the time. It's not all that often that I have babies born here, after all.

It is going to be sad to say goodbye to one or two of the baby boys but I will ensure that they all go to homes where I can stay in touch.

They certainly have the very best home with you. Must be so hard to let any babies go off to new homes. Perhaps you just need an extension and you can keep them all :D

Very sad that Millyn and Blodyn are so affected by what happened. I really don't know how people can sleep at night after so cruelly dumping those piggies.
My RB Rory and Dexter were dumped in a cardboard box next to rubbish bins. Fortunately someone found them before the rubbish collectors came. People who do these things have no idea of the harm they do and the effect it had on the piggies. Or perhaps they just really don't care at all!

Does my heart good to come on here are read about all the lovely people who give so much to ensure piggies are safe and have the best life possible. I could hug you all

Hope your little ones learn to trust and know they are safe.

Thank you. The current post-pandemic/money crunch pet dump situation has sadly passed breaking point as far as guinea pigs and other pets are concerned and is at an unprecedented crisis level. :(

Letting piggies go, especially babies born here, is tough but I have done it before.

Unfortunately, I can keep only so many (especially young boars) because I still need to stick to my long term plan of gradually reducing especially the number of my cages and my overall piggy numbers over the coming years so I can go back to a few small to medium groups rather than having lots of higher maintenance pairs and gradually work my numbers down.

I am just currently a bit ahead of where I was thinking I would be at this stage due to my many losses over the last 15 months and some serendipitous mergers of widowed singles and pairs. I have left space in my medium term plans for my last remaining piggy bucket dream of adopting a ready-made group whenever the time was right although I didn't expect to get there for another 2-3 years.

But neither I nor my husband are getting any younger and we are now at an age where we need to seriously think ahead of where we need to be in five or ten years' time.

Each neutered boar means unfortunately an extra long term cage for me and I already have got another two younger husboars. Four more new boys are just too many for me unfortunately. :(
Anyway, I would never have been able to accommodate a larger litter of Modron's so I have sorted this issue out with Maria as part of my somewhat unusual adoption process of taking on an already pregnant sow.

I completely understand. You do need to think of the future and especially when you have someone else to consider too. It's the sensible thing to do.

I'm sure you'll find a good home for the baby boys. Sounds like you really have your hands full already and they are such a huge commitment.

It is a joy to read this thread, especially on what for me is a very sad day. Much as we don't want there to be unwanted pregnant piggies there is something uplifting about new life coming into the world
Sorry to hear this is a sad day for you. I'm sending you hugs

BIG HUGS

I am so sorry that you are having a sad/bad time yourself.

But I fully agree re. unwanted and unplanned pregnancies as well as uncontrolled mass breeding for sale.
I truly wish they wouldn't happen and that we didn't have to run our courtesy pregnancy/baby support section for these cases but baby antics are most definitely a fail-safe cure for a very sore heart! :)

Without a car of myself, I have never been able to seriously rescue foster but I have tried to be circumspect with my adoptions to give a home to piggies struggling to find a home/needing an experienced home whenever possible.
