My pig Joey went to the vets a few weeks back as he has what seemed like a hay poke. He went back twice and i was using the eye cream they gave me.

Last night i noticed his eye was different and here is what it now looks like. Is this cherry eye or fatty eye or a infection. Its odd that they have occurred over night and it was not like that yesterday morning. It's also in his left eye which had nothing at all wrong with it.

I'm a little nervous about taking him to the vets, as my normal guinea pig vet is off sick and the other 2 know hardly anything about guinea pigs. I feel sick and worried about his eyes and don't know what to do. I'm afraid if i take him they will want to remove the one bad eye, as they may not know about infection etc that guineas may have in their eyes. I put his cream in both eyes last night and they have stayed the same, no change.

This is the eye with the hay poke, the vet said he would be left with a permanent scar which can be seen.

This is the left eye which had nothing wrong with it, up until yesterday.

My other pig who with Joey is fine and his eyes are clear.

Please help..

the first eye definately looks like it has been damaged with a hay poke or hay seed stuck in it, provided a hay seed is not still stuck under his eyelid it should clear up quickly with treatment. the swelling of the tissue around the eye and in the second photo looks like an infection and may possibly need treating with with oral antibotics too.
what eye cream were you given? my cavy savvy vet always recomends fucithalmic. some non savvy vets may suggest eye drops containing steroids but these are not recomended for piggies.
please take your piggy back to a vet, eyes left untreated can get worse very quickly. the vets cannot do any thing you dont give them permission too so dont worry about them removing the eye, it doesnt look to me like that is necessary any way.
i understand your worry about your usual vet being away but any good vet should be able to assess whether eyes have an infection or not, what ever the species:)

Thanks, yes they gave me the fucithalmic. I used it for 2 weeks and then was told to stop and only go back if it got worse. Now his eyes are like this. I'm so nervous about taking him.

Good luck at the vets Sam, please let us know how you get on. It's not typical of fatty eye - that tends to be the lower eyelid drooping, usually seen on older or fat faced pigs (I have a couple).

We have just come back. The vet said it looks like a infection and has given me different drops. We now have tiacil drops. Has anyone used them. He has to have them in 3 times a day. We have to go back on Wednesday. She did say if no improvement he may have to go in and have it cleaned and the dead skin removed from the ulcer.

Yes i have used tiacil before too. different types of infections respond better to different antibiotics, so hopefully they will do the trick.

Thanks i do hope this works. I was so worried that they eye would have to be removed! He is happy in himself and eating normally etc. Which is good and he is being spoilt lots xx

thats great to hear. damaged eyes can look awful sometimes but with prompt treatment it is amazing how well they usually heal. if the drops dont work speak to your vet about oral antibiotics.earlier this year one of my piggies had a watery eye with the skin around it a little inflamed but the eye its self undamaged, drops didnt make any difference but when she was put on septrin it cleared up nicely:)

A little update his eye looks the same today. It looks so horrid. I hope that I will see a improvement by Tuesday. I did wonder about oral antibiotics. I really hope that the drops work and that he don't have to have his eye out,as its a little cloudy today. X X

Aww hope he is better soon hun. One of mine had a terrible eye injury/infection a few months back & I had to put her on oral antibiotics & anti inflammatories as well as eye drops - it cleared up brilliantly but did take a while

Thanks for the well wishes. All toes and fingers crossed here too. He is quieter than normal just hope he isn't feel too sore. I've given him some metacam just incase.

just wondering how joey is getting on?

I have been unable to log onto the site for A while. Unfortunately joey had his right eye removed on the 25th Sept. As it was not responding to any of the treatment. I have been handing feeding him and nursing him back to health. We have also had to treat the left eye and there is a chance we may also have to remove that eye too. He was booked in today to Iate it removed as It was going the same as the other eye, but last night I noticed the swelling had come down and The eye was less red,so we went to see the vet today who agreed it looked better,so we are carrying on with treatment and hopefully if The eye continues to improve we can save it. He is now able to close his eye and he allows you to touch it where as before he could not close the eye or let you touch it. It is still red and looks horrid but we are giving the eye a chance.

Joey is eating well and gaining weight daily.

Still doing very well, went back to the vets today at 10.20 am and the vet was very pleased that they swelling has come down again since she saw him on Monday. She also seen how active he now is and was pleased that he was running about on the table. She also weighed him and he had put on weight, which i already know as i weigh him daily to make sure he's not losing any. She said it will be weeks before the eye will fully heal and we came home with more antibiotics. We have to go back on Tuesday.

The only worry for me is the eye is still pruding quite a lot, but when i put the drops in he closes his eye!

so sorry to hear he has lost an eye.:( have just caught up with this thread today as the forum has been down and am really hoping his other is still improving. this must be breaking your heart but it may help a little to know that if the worst does happen and he loses his other eye that blind piggies usually cope very well x

Oh my gosh. I am sorry he had to have his eye removed. It sounds like it was really serious for the vet to come to that decision. I really hope he gets well and starts to eat again soon.

Joey is still doing very well and he is eating by himself and is back to his cheeky self. He is coping very well with one eye and I'm sure that he only has little sight in his only eye, as he does walk into things when he's unsure where he is. But the eye is improving every day and we have another vets visit on Tuesday. So hopefully this is a sign that the eye is on the mend.

Thanks for your support and wishes, Joey and Gizmo send some wheeks and hugs back x

Good news joey has now been discharged from the vets as his eye is now healing. We just have a little more healing to go and all should be ok. Which is a huge relief for me and of course joey.

Thanks for the well wishes. X X
