My guinea pig cocoa bean has been chirping lately and I'm not really sure why. The first time I heard it was at like 2am this morning and then just now she went into a chirping frenzy that lasted like 5mins until I interrupted. And then she started to do it again, what does it mean?

Only seen it once and my piggy seemed to be in a trance so not sure why it was happening!

You are as wise as we are when it comes to chirping! It happens more often at night than in the day (although there is daytime chirping). Some piggies are regular chirpers while most piggies never chirp.

Sometimes it can seem to express a feeling of disquiet or a warning, judging from the reaction of my piggies when they hear a record, but not always. My chirper Heulwen seems to do it more frequently when there are tensions in the room. But there are situations when there is no clue whatsoever about what could be going on.

Chirping happens too rarely and unexpectedly to research it properly. It is perhaps the biggest cavy mystery.

I’ve only ever heard it once when I was piggy sitting a while ago. It was about 1 or 2 in the morning and the Guinea pig I was looking after made me think there was a bird trapped in my room! I did lots of googling but there wasn’t any clear answers, just guesses.

I would love to have a chirping piggy. You're very lucky. I've only ever seen it in a video on this forum. Before that I never even knew it was something they could do.

ive two piggies that chirp,it is always at 2am ,all the piggies in fleurs herd all stand still and gaze at fleur, then it stops and they all carry on as before.the most beautiful sound.

Just Caught Dopple Chirping :)

Here's a link to my video when Dopple decided to have a chirp, it was really surreal as she was having a cuddle at the time!
Its a strange, captivating, fascinating &yet slightly eerie sound all at once!

Not so lucky at 3am but its definitely and interesting sound, definitely strange how they all stiffen up when she does it

That's exactly what happened when i looked over, she was standing still, laying down by her favorite hidey, and she was just frozen still by herself while the other 2 watched, and we made eye contact but she still chirped, it was kind funny

I read somewhere that it's a sound that usually mother's make to their babies, that it's supposed to be some motherly nurturing sound? I think lol but obviously thats irrelevant to my pup

No, this is definitely not true! In the 10 years that our forum has been around, I have never heard this from any of our members dealing with an unplanned pregnancy. All chirping that has been mentioned on this forum has happened in
very different settings and situations.

Personally, I would rather assume that the person saying that has had rather stressed mums expressing their concerns!

Apparently it's an unknown behavior where the purpose is really still unknown. I had a couple of pigs years ago that would occasionally chirp- I heard it occasionally from both of them. I have never heard it from my current pigs, though.

I have one pig who chirps very occasionally (not heard her do it for at least 6 months). Over the years I've had 7 guineas and she is the only one I have heard chirping :) She didn't seem distressed, and I don't remember any particular attention from the other guinea when she did it. It's a funny little behaviour. (This guinea has no babies and no uterus, for medical reasons, so I would be surprised if it was maternal!)

Hi! I have managed to record it after a sleepless night of chirping ! have had guinea pigs for many years and have only had two who have chirped, both girls, but they rarely did it. It was always in the hours between midnight and about 4am. At the time, I thought they may be cold, very trance like and eerie too! However I now have a girl coming up five months old, who is quite confident, rumble struts and mounts the others about once a month, nothing vicious, so I am starting to think it could be a season/dominance thing as it's her time of the month!. This seems to be when she does it, and it is all night and loudly. So I am starting to think it could be a dominance thing. Unfortunately I can't seem to attach voice recorder which is quite annoying but I will try and find a way.
