¡¡¡Muchas gracias!

Hello everyone! My name is Miriam, I'm from Spain (Madrid). I just joined this forum because I want to be a better pigmum.

This thread is about Rex, it's a one-year-old pig. He is happy, he eats a lot, he plays with the other pigs ... But since I have it, I noticed that sometimes (like 2 or 3 a week) he makes some noises when he breathes. So I took him to the vet and he was diagnosed with chronic bronchitis. Here are the photos.

So, if you can see,he has white spots on his lungs, that's why he can't breathe normally sometimes. The vet told me there is no cure, and he gave me Fortecortin (composed of dexamethasone) which is basically a corticoid. I'm a little worried because I found in Google that corticoids and steroids are the same (I don't know if I'm wrong, that's why I need help). I read the thread that says steroids are harmful to guinea pigs, so I don't know if I should use that medicine. I thought that the vet would recommend a bronchodilator medication (some of them are long-lasting, so you can use it once a day and it would help prevent a crisis). What happens is that I need something to prevent these crisis and the Fortecortin can only be used at the time of the crisis. I've also read about nebulizers, but if you can explain, that would be great! I would also love some advice (I know there are some bronchodilator plants). Thank you!

Hi and welcome!

I am linking in @Abi_nurse and @Jaycey for you, as they have the most knowledge re. medication and whether nebulising would help.
Thank you for the translation!

Hi there,
Very lovely X-rays. Nice to see them like this. What does your vet think the problem is? Personally I would steer away from steroids unless they are particularly concerned about something other an infection. Looks like a congested lung pattern to me which may be from infectious causes. Have used brocho dilators in rodents, it would be worth a go if the vet is concerned about the bronchial area. Really need to know what the vet thinks they re treating.
As for nebulising. It involves making a steam into the air so that the patient can breath in medications. We do this a lot in the uk in poorly piggies and can be effective. You place them into an enclosed space and then steam the area with a special machine.
