Chunky off colour? :(

General advice please before I start to panic


chunky - normally a good eater and poos for England :D is not himself .

Was out for his run on the floor on sunday - big pile of poop as usual. Back in cage yesterday was quiet and snoozy (but he often is cos he does hurtle round like a mad thing). Fed them both veggies yesterday evening as normal but he wasn't as interested so I put a bit of lettuce by his hidey and he tucked into that as normal.

This morning a lot of veggies uneaten... and he didn't come running when I put out the Wagg. He then walked out and sat/flopped in the cage lifting his left hind leg in the air occasionally

Got him out (easier than normal) put him on floor and he walked OK (slower tho) but no obvious paralysis or problems there

Checked his pouch cant see anything blocking so I palpated his abdomen and it does feel full, tho he doesn't complain at this so not in pain. After about 10 mins of this he passed a big lump of 3 poos together - but they are very soft. Have spent half an hour assisting him to poo all of the same consistency probably about 12/14 in all. Every so often he hunches up at the back and give a sort of urrgh squeak but nothing is appearing. There are little spots of wee on the towel, but not puddles and his is shivering a bit. I got about 10ml of cranberry & raspberry juice down him too.

Suggestions of what next? Am filling a water bottle for him to lie on because he does feel colder than usual.

Non of us ar qualifi to iagnos, but a guina pig that is passing bloo from any orific ns to b sn by a vtrinary surgon without lay.

It souns as though hunky may hav a urinary tract infction or blar stons, but a vt will n to s him without oubt to sort th problm (whatvr it is) out.

I agree a vet sounds like the best bet, I do hope it's nothing serious!

He could have a UTI or a blockage of some sort from what you've described with the lifting of legs, not passing stools etc. It could be the start of impaction.... Is he complaining when he goes to the loo? any wheeking? Sounds like you've given yourself a headstart with the cranberry but he might need some a/b's just to ward off any bugs on top.

Hi Barbara.. not sure where you got the blood bit from... I certainly didn't post that :o

I'm a member of CCT so have spoken to Vedra and she told me to check if it was bloat - but says it doesn't appear to be from what I describe. She has recommended I try him on 1/2 a tablet morning & afternoon of DIDA 90 (from Holland & Barrett) and see what that does. Went and got some... 19.95 (eeek - a lot for me cos I'm on benefits) but he had half tablet crushed & syringed in at 2pm with no fuss.

After warming him a bit and massaging his tummy & back end more, he's passed a lot more normal looking stools and is eating hay no problems. He is also a bit more active now. I've just disinfected the cage and put fresh bedding in and am doing the same with water bottles. Hes only squeaked once more when passing a stool and he turned round and ate it right away so I guess that is a good sign. Hes also weed and that was OK - normal colour and with no squeaking.

I'm just going to wash his back end before I put him back in the cage cos hes a bit of a mess - Poo!

Looks a bit more like his old self again... I wish I'd had a camera ready earlier tho. I'd put Taz (his son) out on the floor whilst I cleaned the cage and Chunks was in a washing up bowl with vet bed and a towel over him... I put it on the floor and Taz - who is more active - came and put his paws up on the side and was looking over at the "patient" as if to say - "You OK dad?" It was sooo cute. :D

Anyway I'll let you know how he progresses... Unfortunately I dint have a really good vet near me - none that specialise in piggies anyway, but Vedras at the end of a phone so I'm not panicking yet as she didn't seem overly worried.

final report... after a few days on DIDA 90 Chunky is back to his usual pig headed always hungry self....
Am so pleased! :D
Vedra says to keep him on it for a week to ensure his tummy is back to rights.
(for those who dont know DIDA 90 seems to be something used by humans to balance the gut and ged rid of candida infections)
