she has lost quite a bit of weight but is eating like a horse, I found a spot of blood on her bottom as well this morning a tiny speck, have given her baytril in case of infection, am a little wary of vets as she is acting perfectly normal, what I need to know what problems could it be , I have a few ideas but want some others advice, of course will take her to vets if no change but shes not the sort of pig to cope with being man handled and prodded she only allows me to cuddle her, no one else will be able to ,

I appreciate you are worried your vets Michelle, but really this Little one needs to be seen by a professional to asses what the problem may be. And just as importantly the treatment. I have had to take some very wild and terrified rescue guineas to the vet in my time, it is stressful for them...but it must be done. I realise it is difficult for you, but I know you will want the best for Clara.

With guineas it can be sometimes very difficult to see whether the bleeding is via the vagina, rectum or urethra (opening to the bladder.)
Hopefully it is simply an infection and in light of no other abnormality on examination, your vet would likely try antibiotics first. It's what I would expect from mine. Obviously though the worst scenario is that it could be a growth, which may or may not be palpable on exam, in some part of her abdomen. Bladder stones may also cause friction in the bladder and bleeding.
It is of concern that she has lost weight "quite a bit of weight" - while still eating well.

Hope you can get her sorted and it is not something to serious.
Obviously...just my thoughts...I'm not a vet!
Take care,
Barbara

am giving her baytril over the weekend then taking her monday morning, no other signs or bleeding or even any squeaking when she pees have had her on vetbed to see if any blood appears but so far she is just noshing for England, Jovi did barber her a bit so she is looking a bit tatty now its growing back ( jovis stopped now shes found veggies taste better little madam) have got the vets monday as Max the dog is still itching under his belly and has now an inflamed ear which has always been a sign of sensativity to what hes eating so he is on rice and chicken until monday when I can get more medicine for him, have got enough canural to last weekend for his ear and see if the rice works so I have more to tell vet, vets are totally booked until monday they only do 2 hours in am and 2 in pm, the big hospital is booked until monday morning so am getting next available appointment, I think she will be fine until then, but any change then its out of hours emergency time,

Aww you poor love. I know you know what is best for them both and hoping that Max starts feeling better soon.

Could it possibly be that Jovi bit her a little too hard causing a bit of blood and also maybe that the little madam was bullying Clara a bit, enough for her to not eat for a while?

Just a thought.

Love always x

no Jovis not barbered for ages and only ever pulled the hair rather then nipping, most of the girls did'nt even mind her doing it,
think it might be an infection so am hoping the baytril works over the weekend,
max has always had this problem even as a pup so I know exactly what to do with him,
the vet would have given me baytril today if i had got an appointment anyway so am just saving his time, at least i can say when he suggests it that she has been on it for 3 days already, she looks and is acting fine shes normally in the pigloo if not at the food so I got a good look and feel of her today, cant feel any swelling either,

Aww, ok.

Does seem totally pointless to see vet at the mo, like you said to give you baytril anyway :)

shes looking good no sign of blood anywhere and she looked fine she was as always eating , max ate rice last night but the eyes got to me lol little monkey still its for his own good

Good luck with little Clara, keep on eating sweetie pie :-*
Hope Max goes OK too, give him a big scratch behind the ears from me :-*

Just out of interest Michele, where do you get the Baytril from, I thought it was a prescription only medicine :)
Barbara

when my pigs get baytril given they often give me more then necessary to bide me over as they know how many pigs i have and may need it urgently over a weekend etc but i do make sure of a cut off date and write it on the front, the last lot I'm using for Clara was maisies who died recently,
clara is doing well and has gained a little weight, think it must have been an infection, no blood since the only spot. maybe she was constipated, but shes been on 3ml twice a day and has improved max is now only having chicken and rice and I got him more piriton today so fingers crossed he stops scratching his belly, his ear is a lot better already,

unfortunatly I found Clara died during the night I had a gut feeling she would not make it, her eyes were shut tight so fingers crossed it was in her sleep the other girls were as usual lying round her keeping her warm, I now suspect it was as the vet said a stone or kidney probs but was too frail for any op and i did not intend putting her through it, she was on pain relief and baytril until the end cuddled and drip fed water etc, God bless my little sweetie give your daughter Evee a kiss for me :-* and henry your other half a kiss as well, :-* :'( :'( :'(

Sorry to hear this, it does seem that there was something more going on than originally thought.
Sweet dreams Clara.
Take care,
Barbara
