Hi I have two male guinea pigs but one has suddenly lost some weight over the last week, has been drinking more water and today has got a cloudy eye. He is also very quiet. He is normally the more energetic of the two and is totally not bothered about being touched or even bothering to run away in the hope of staying in his hutch. They do live outside but the hutch has been shut off from their run and has been insulated. The other guinea pig is perfectly healthy. I have bought both Guinea's inside today and plan a vet visit tomorrow but wondered if there is anything I should be doing for him in the meantime.

Yes I definitely think a vet visit is needed. I'm wondering if the two things are related though. Does it look as if he has got a poke injury to his eye? Sometimes a bit of hay can get stuck in the eye and cause it to go opaque. If it's an eye injury then the antibiotic drops chloramphenicol can be used, which can be bought over the counter as Optrex Infected Eyes. Just don't tell the pharmacist they are for a guinea pig!

However, I definitely think there is more going on here. Is he still eating ok? If not, you must get food into him until you can get to see the vet tomorrow.

I hope he's soon feeling better.

Oh and welcome to the forum. We are a friendly bunch, and hope you enjoy the forum.

I'm sorry to sound negative but it sounds like diabetes. Hope the vets visit goes well. If he's eating and drinking for himself that's a good sign. If the eye is mucky you could bathe it with boiled, cool water.

Thanks for replying. I have been keeping an eye on him today. He has eaten a little but is so subdued and seems very tiny compared to normal. I checked the eye for signs of a foreign body but there doesn't seem to be anything there. Seems to have happened so quickly as well. Will let you know what the vet says.

Cloudy eye and weight loss update

Hi

Have been to the vets this morning and poor little Bubble has a series of problems. He has a skin and chest infection and has unfortunately gone blind in one eye. We have a weeks course of antibiotics for infections and cream for his eye as the vet says that it will still be very painful for him at the moment. Another visit to the vet on Wednesday so that they can see if there is any improvement. He has managed to eat a carrot which is better but maybe not drinking as much today. Fingers crossed these meds work as the kids are so fond of Bubble and Squeak.

Thanks for advice yesterday.

Helen

I'm sorry to hear that Bubble is having a tough time. Fingers crossed the meds work for him :)

I hope Bubble is soon feeling much better. I'm not convinced about him being blind. I'm thinking that the eye may start to look better, or at least i'm hoping it will. However piggies do fine with the use of only one eye. One of my piggies had her eye removed a few months ago and it hasn't affected her at all.

I'm very sorry to hear Bubble is ill. Keeping fingers crossed for you here. x
