hey! I was wondering if anyone can help :( yesterday I realized that my guinea pig was squinting his eye a lot and squeaking loudly whenever he was being touched by anyone. Today I woke up and saw that his eye is now cloudy. Does anyone know what is going on? I’m getting nervous :(

Hello and sorry about your piggies eye. He may have just poked his eye with a piece of hay. Happened to mine. few weeks ago. The vet gave me eye drops for him which cleared it up pretty quickly. Hope he gets better soon.

Please see a vet as a matter.
The cloudiness suggests his eye is ulcerating. This may have been caused by haypoke.
All eye issues, are considered urgent and need to to be seen by a vet urgently - all eye issues should be dealt with within 24 hours of the issue occurring as eyes deteriorate quickly.

The vet will need to check there is not still hay present trapped under the wood (ie so not continually scratching the eye). A fluorescent dye will be used in the eye to check the ulceration and extent of damage.
Hay poke is treated with antibiotic eye drops, pain killers are also needed. We also recommend a lubricating gel to help aid the healing process

thank you everyone 🙏🏻 I took him to the vet but they kept him and won’t be able to see him until tomorrow morning which sucks because it’s already been 2 days :( but hopefully they’ll be able to fix his eye and it won’t be damaged 😢💙

Thank you! I got a call back and they have to keep him for a week! He has a scratch on his eye and I also had a hunch that he may have a cold and I was right with that as well! 😢 hopefully they will fix him right up 🤍🫶🏻

Guinea pigs do not get viral colds. They get bacterial respiratory infections.
I’ve never heard of a Guinea pig being kept in the vet for a haypoke.

Ive never heard of a piggy being kept in the vets for a haypoke. A very bad pneumonia may hospitalize a piggy but generally respiratory infections can be treated with antibiotics, and syringe feeding and daily weight checks at home.

I think they kept him because I got him from petco and I realized that they offer a free vet clinic for the first 30 days. She told me I can pick him up in a week because they are treating him. But I’m not sure. She told me that he had a minor eye scratch and cold. Maybe she means a URI but minor. The petstore employee told me that not the doctor so maybe that’s why she just said cold because she doesn’t know much. 😮
