Hi. It’s my first post! One of my piggies has a reoccurring abscess on her jaw and this time the Eronbactin she has always been prescribed isn’t shifting it. We don’t have any exotic vets nearby and my vet has suggested a referral to try and remove it as it’s not their specialism and deems it risky. I suggested trying another antibiotic and co-trimoxazole has been prescribed. I had to sign a disclaimer as they says it’s not licensed in the uk for guinea pig use? Has anybody else had experience of using this? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum. That is the drug name for septrin I believe a well tolerated antibiotic
Where about in the country are you? @furryfriends (TEAS) runs a dental sanctuary for piggies and is very knowledgable

Thank you so much for your replies. I feel much better now I know what it is and it’s safe. I’ve only had piggies for a year and still finding my feet with this sort of thing! Both vets I have been to only prescribed Eronbactin. Am I much more likely to get prescribed the others mentioned here at those who specialise in small mammals? After reading on forums I’m also going to try mushing pellets to feed as she hates critical care and it a battle every day! This group is very good. So glad I’ve joined.

You are very likely to get prescribed those drugs at the Cat and Rabbit Clinic in Northampton, Simon Maddock is a fabulous vet who really knows his stuff about guinea pigs x We travel their for conscious dentals.

It's a safe med (a couple of my pigs have taken it for respiratory bugs), but as others have said, it may not be up to the job. I second the idea of finding a vet who is accustomed to working with guinea pig teeth. Jaw abscesses can be nasty and persistent (I've been through a couple here!) and often require lancing/draining or removal, heavy antibiotics, and sometimes dental work to keep the teeth properly aligned. An experienced vet can literally be the difference between life and death. It's worth a bit of travel to find one. Best wishes!

I just wanted to add that when my boar Eddi suffered with a nasty jaw abscess Simon was actually happy to offer advice to my vet, as clearly I couldn't travel to him in the UK.
He really does know his stuff and has saved many guinea pigs with his specialist knowledge.

Thank you. I’m definite ju going to look into further. Holly House Leeds is where the the referral would be if I went through my vet.i think it’s on your recommended list.

You wouldn’t need a referral to go see Simon Maddock at the Cat and Rabbit Clinic at Northampton, you can just give them a ring and book an appointment. You can get your vet to send your piggies details and treatment over online x

Isn't there an October half term coming up, just a warning, both vets normally holiday or at least are off, what seems every half term
