Hi
Please can any one help me with info and treatment on coccidiosis?
I have lost several one of which only 6 months old, but the vet will only prescribe septrin for 14 days as a preventative! This was after I lost another at the begining of July. Now i have just found blood in the feaces again but unsure which of my 7 sows it is from. I'm at my wits end!
I have searched online and this link
http://www.australiancavysanctuary.com/shelters.htm
recomends baycox for piglets, but my vet says it isn't licenced for guinea pigs and will not prescribe it!
I'm just so worried iam going to loose more guinea pigs.
I live in the Yorkshire dales bordering Lancashire and Cumbria if any one can please suggest a vet or rodentologist near to me please?
thanks
Trudy

hey, sorry to hear about your pigs. This is usually quite a quiet period but there should be some more knowledgeable members in the morning.

from my experience with cocidiosis spetrin is not the right antibiotic to treat it and sadly its best treated with a engamyclin (sp) based drug which I believe piggies cannot have. Its a prevelant issue and very hard to get rid of, long periods of antibiotics and specific ones have been what I have used in the past.

My advice is to seek out a vet that is cavy savy and tackle the problem head on with them. Good luck

First thing is to get a poo sample analysed for bacteria and protozoa to identify the bug..... It may not be coccidiosis but another infection. As part of the analysis there should be a culture done to determine antibiotic sensitivity.

Armed with these results your vet should be more amenable to prescribing the right medication.

As your vet seems reticent to prescribe off-license, 9or even suggest a poo sample) you may be better going to a cavy savvy vet; The nearest one to you i think is probably the group below in Bradford;

International Zoo vets Shearbridge Veterinary Centre on 01274 731299.

If this has been working ots way through your piggies then extra hygiene measues and a good disinfectant (virkon/trigene/F10 -depending upon what the bug is) may be necessary

Hi
I managed to get hold of the g.pig specialist. He has said that coccidiosis is possible but not a common as people often think and other causes of blood and straining are more common. He has advised sending a sample to the lab to be tested. They will check for coccidiosis, clostridia, salmonella etc.
He advised using the septrin as you are currently
He has used baycox before, so we can order this in. however if a sample comes back -ve for cocci. this would be a waste of money. (Whereas the Septrin is also antibiotic and would help if it was a salmonella or clostridia problem).
Please collect several bits of faeces and keep them in the fridge (in a container!) until you bring them in. try to get ones that look bloody if possible.
I have ordered you some more septrin

Ive not found any more blood today (touch wood) but last night it was frightening , really red and clotted. I'm sure the septrin wouldnt have started to work already though.
Still dont know which guinea it is yet as all seem ok in themselves, but as I well know thery hide it so well.

OMG i'm so sorry to hear about your piggies :(
I had been leaving this thread to our more knowledgeable peeps! but just want to offer some support xx>>>

Can you try having each piggie out for awhile on some white towels or cloths, feeding them some lettuce or leaves and then hopefully they'll give you a sample? I wish you luck, sounds to me like you're really trying your hardest, i do hope the vets can find out exactly the problem pronto for you :...

GOOD LUCK XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
