Hi all,
Lately I've been noticing a cockroach that occasionally gets into the guinea pig enclosure, despite their cage being very clean (I just cleaned it out and replaced the fleece yesterday!) and the guinea pigs are kept indoors at all times! Our house is an old house and we have had problems with ants in the past, and I have heard cockroaches can spread disease and other unwanted illness. Can somebody tell me how to stop this, and how to dispose/remove the cockroach from the C and C cage? I am worried this will become a health hazard to the guinea pigs.

Thanks for the tag!

luckily for me you don’t really get the common household type cockroaches where I live as it’s too cold for them.
Eugh poor you I hate cockroaches! When I lived in Queensland for a few months the only thing that got rid of the cockroaches was using the poison/gas stuff designed to kill them. But you CANNOT use that with you pigs in the house as it will kill the pigs (as you probably know).
It’s a very frustrating problem for you as cockroaches seem to quite like clean warm places to hide. I feel like there might be roach traps available? Perhaps that’s an option?
Sorry I don’t have an answer

Yes I've lived in Queensland almost my whole life and cockroaches are so annoying. I will try to do some research on piggy safe natural pest removal.

Update: the cockroach has returned and is sitting in their pellet bowl ☹️ I've been trying to look at pet safe pest removal methods but no luck so far 😓

PLEASE DO NOT use glue traps if there is any mice around. It is an awfully cruel and excruciating way for a mouse to die.
And also don’t let your pigs anywhere near the traps!

good luck!
The ones for insects are NOT strong or big enough to trap mice.

The ones for insects aren't strong enough for mice, and there also aren't mice around or in my house at all (I am also against trapping mice) . And if I did use a glue trap (which I can't as the hardware stores are closed) I wouldn't put it near my pets - but thank you for informing me 👍

Now I put out a gel I think its called Kiwi care and is a Nest killer gel bait. I use gloves and then smudge it under exterior window frames and places where the rain wont wash it off. You've got to be careful as I imagine it is poisonous. It had definitely reduced the numbers of cockroaches at work

Please ignore the quoted post I wrote about me using a glue trap for roaches in regards to mice. Just found out baby mice can get trapped in them - so sorry

Oh my gosh, I will have to rethink using a glue trap.
I dont think it happens a lot but as the baby mouse was so small, it happened this time. Once is enough for me. I found the nest gel was much more successful anyway so thats the only thing I use now. Considering how many cockroaches we have at work, we got very few in the traps so I don't think the traps are at all effective.

Would be more worried with the nest gels that the insects walking through it ,and walking on the piggies food and piggies ingesting the poison.

Gosh I never thought of that. Although it is meant to be used outdoors and if used well away from that part of the house, the overall population of cockroaches would be decreased. the alternative is to get a pest exterminator in but they use spray and the nest gel as well. Or just put up with the cockroaches walking all over their food. At work we have used pest exterminators, glue traps and the gel. The gel worked pretty much as well as the pest exterminator if used regularly ie every 3 to 6 months. The glue trap was useless and trapped a baby mouse.
But I would certainly be aware that yes there is a chance the cockroaches may walk all over the piggies food with this poison so if you choose to use it then do so with great caution and well away from that part of the house. Now I am unsure if this is a good thing or not. But as far as getting rid of cochroaches it is probably the best way to go. But should it be used when you own piggies? I can no longer be sure that I can recommend it.

I have researched cockroach removal and now that teddymouse has pointed out the challenge of putting gel bait out I have changed my mind about the use of it when owning guinea pigs. We used it at work where we only have a cat so I never considered that possibility. The best course of action would be to consult a pest exterminator to see if they can advise of something safe. Any one know a pest exterminator?

i live in india..... my house is full of cockroaches! what we do is take all the piggies out in another room, take out all their bedding and hideys and food and everything and spray some anti cockroach spray near their cage like around it(but not in the cage area) and then wait for the smell of spray to mellow down like 5-6 hours. untill then the piggies are in another room and after that we wipe inside the cage with a wet cotton cloth just to be on safe side and then put all their stuff back in cage amd leave them back in after 6-7 hours... we keep out piggies in big cardboard boxes in another room and it doesn’t seem to bother them for 6-7 hours plus do it about once a month and there would be no roaches wandering even near their cage😌

and yes u can use the gel type in same way too!

UPDATE: THE COCKROACHES HAVE NOT RETURNED TO THE GUINEA PIGS CAGE FOR 3 DAYS
I noticed that when the cockroaches got into the guinea pig cage they seemed to be going for the pellets and lying in their pellet bowl.. I decided to remove the pellet bowl and only put it in there when they were actually eating their pellets. So far they have not returned to the guinea pig cage.. hoping this continues to work.

Hey, I’m from North Carolina so I have roaches in my cage often as well, I have lived here my whole life so I’m quite used to handling and catching them although it can be hard and scary. My recommendation would be to remove your guinea pig(s) as discretely as possible so the roach doesn’t leave, then you have to catch it by surprise. Quickly put a cup on top of the roach therefore trapping it and slide a piece of paper under it and you can dispose of it however you would like. But that is a temporary solution, if you continue to see roaches in your cage then you should repeat this and call an exterminator. Hope this helps :)

Guinea pigs are always hungry they love food, that’s not gonna work you just got to kill the roach and it’s friends every time you see it

They should have constant access to hay, the largest part of their diet. Pellets should be limited to a tablespoon a day for each piggy.

I don't like using chemicals in the garden and apply a very thick, wide layer of vaseline around all my pots and it prevents all pests getting in. Could you have the cage on a stand and apply vaseline or something non toxic the cockroaches can't climb on?
