Hi! I've recently noticed my white, short haired sow has a very active grease gland, and it shows up particularly well on her white fur. The fur around her gland is clumped and further out it seems to be brown and yucky. I've tried multiple times to clean it with warm water, but I've just read on here about cleaning grease glands and I now understand I need some coconut oil. Is their any particular ones that are good? I always get nervous I'm going to pick one that will irritate them.

Also does anyone else have a sow with a messy grease gland? I've had 4 other sows in the past and none of them have had such a messy bum!😅 Or maybe it's just because shes white?

Thank you!

Being white won’t help. I once had a sow with an overactive grease gland. Any coconut oil is fine to use. I got mine from boots and it was their home brand

We have a blonde-and-white sow who has a very gunky yucky grease gland throughout the summer! We have used olive oil to loosen the gunk then given a bum bath with Gorgeous Guineas piggy shampoo to clean her up, I dont think there is a particular brand of coconut oil to use just avoid for example mineral oils or harsh cleansers like swarfega- some people recommend the harsher products but piggies have very sensitive skin and if you clean aggressively it can irritate the skin and also cause even more grease secretion.
So keep it clean and healthy but also be sensitive to the fact that the grease gland secretions are "like piggy perfume or a fashion statement" according to our vet, they use bum grease to scent mark and tell everyone who they are so over-cleaning the area is quite stressful for them!

Ah thank you that is very helpful! I'll be mindful not to wipe it too clean too often!

Thanks everyone I'll grab a jar of coconut oil on my next food shop!

I’ve used coconut oil recently and couldn’t believe that it actually worked wonders. And the grease patch hasn’t come back yet 👍🏻 And it’s been a couple of months.
