Hi :)p

My great uncle is over visiting and years&years ago he kept guinea pigs as pets... and he said in the winter months he would give them bran and warm water mixed together or warm potato peelings as a lovely hot meal for them..

Aparently he swears by it as his piggies would live to around 9years old and get lovely and fat...:)) Just wondering what people thought about this.. never heard of this before..rolleyes

I give my piggies a teaspoon of bran mixed with water each for their breakfast. I read it somewhere. It said to use warm water but mine prefer cold water. I have never given potato to them. I did not think that they could have it. BTW the piggies love the bran.

That sounds like the bran mash I used to give my horse over the winter, didn't think piggies would like it! Potatoes are poisonous to them.

I also give my piggys bran and bought a huge pack from Holland and Barret's a few weeks ago, its lasting ages as i only have my two boys. I think i paid 89p for it and its called wheat bran, its in the cereal section. I also give them oats they love both and i give them oats one day and bran the other, i dont add any water, i just add it to their bowls with their dry food.

:)

I give my guineas warm bran too! Only one of them likes it but I still give them enough for the two just in case the other one takes an interest. They both stand over it and warm their noses if it's particularly cold. It's perfect for outdoor piggies and is really cheap - 89p a bag from H&B.

I think potatoes are ok if they have been boiled. I know that they are toxic if they are eaten raw. I've never thought of giving them to guineas though, I don't think I'd trust it, but it obviously didn't do your great uncles pigs any harm :)
