Have just read the thread about the girl who is doing the dissertation into piggie neuturing. The responses have kind of alarmed me a bit ?/.

After long discussions with my partner, we have decided to give Nigel a girlie pig companion so he needs to be neutured. Am a bit worried now having read how many of you have had problems?

There is always risks with surgery, however many are successful, with no problems at all. I would only neuter as a last resort though. Would Nigel not like a little baby boy to pal up with, there are lots in rescue, and this would mean no surgery needed. x

You need to make sure you take him to a piggy savy vet who does lots of neuters! You do not want yours to be the first! I think there is a sticky about neutering somewhere if you look for it.

I had my boy done 4 weeks ago no problems. He was 5 1/2 months old when he had it done and was with a vet that has done loads and loads successful surgeries. The vet really makes a difference as does the age of the guinea pig. Although no surgery is without it's risks.

I agree, neutering is only an option here when we've tried everything else i.e bonding with a baby boar or an adult boar.

Whilst we now have a very good vet and a high success rate, there is always a risk, so if there are other options I would explore them first. Bonding an adult boar with a baby boar is usually the best chance of a match, a rescue should be able to help you match him up

I was speaking to a friend that runs a re-homing rescue and out of 53 pigs neutered this year only one died due to aesthetic complications ,

but to my mind that is one pig two many and I always look to the other option of bonding a boar with another boar , a good rescue will let you take your boy , and tried him with prospective partner’s ,

it is some times consuming , and the last one I bonded this way was an old man I rescued after his partner had died , and the family had had enough

I took him to one of my local rescues , and after countless boars , we hit on one that he now lives with happily , on the other hand I have had boars that have bonded almost instantly .

I would and have neutered a boar to enrich his life quality , but only if he was relatively young and there where no other options
