I seriously can't find how my late piggy, Reeses, had died. I'm very heartbroken about it, because I don't know what he suffered from or what caused it.

His symptoms:

  1. Mild weight loss, gained a little weight eating new food, and then around Thur-Fri there was a drastic change in weight in that time period. He was kind of boney.
  2. Drooling
  3. Often arch his back and spitting up more saliva, which made him drool even more. Possibly trying to vomit, but nothing TO vomit...?
  4. Didn't do number 1 or 2, from what I saw the entire time. Not even in his changed bedding.

After death:

Since he had died so late at night, I couldn't bury him right away. The next day when I had to take him out; because we were about to put him in to a box... he looked like he was sleeping, stiff, obviously he was in Rigor Mortis state and cold..
I noticed something that was not on him prior to his death, which were very small white bugs crawling all throughout his fur, everywhere. Some were coming out of the corner of his eye, and his ears. What the hell? I was disgusted about this and sad for him. Nothing I could do about it though, so then I sealed him in a plastic zip lock bag, and a tightly sealed cardboard box from duct tape... a long with some pretty fake roses I put beside him inside.

The previous few days:

About a week or less ago, I noticed Reeses had not been touching his pellets and had lost weight, so I assumed that he just got sick of eating the kind that I was giving him. I got two new kinds of food with a variety of things in them along with the pellets. Tried one of the brands and gave it to him and I personally watched him go over to his bowl. He went to it with curiosity and started munching away. So, I was relieved and kept an eye on him. Everything was just fine for a few days.

He ate, and it looked like he was starting to gain a little of his weight back. I was pretty sure he would be alright because there were no other sorts of symptoms that looked out of the usual. I came home from school Friday, started to clean, and put together what I needed to bring over to my Boyfriend's because I was spending the night that weekend. [ I have family who live at home to tend to their needs. ] That evening while I was in the middle of cleaning, I looked over at Resee's in his cage, he was looking right at me, and suddenly I felt a bad vibe so I went to check on him and he just didn't look so well anymore. So I prepared one of the smaller cages that I have and all the things he needed and brought him with me that night to keep an eye on him, whether he'd die or not. I did this because I wouldn't want him to be alone if anything happened to him. I try to be there to til end for them

Over at my boyfriend's, I checked on him periodically, gave him comfort, and what not. Even though he was getting closer to passing away that night, I held, snuggled, and kissed him like I always do. Despite his condition, he still brought himself up to under my neck where he always loved to be and rest. I Put him in his cage to rest after I spent time with him and went in to the living room with my boyfriend for awhile. We came back to the bedroom around 1:00 am - 1:30 am and I was going to check on him one more time before bed. But that was it, he was gone and from the feel of him he died probably a few minutes before I checked on him. I figured because his body temperature is the same as he was alive when I felt him.

I apologize for all of the writing, but I felt I had to express myself. I'm not a sensitive person by all means, but when it comes to animals, especially the ones I love and have bonded to, it's a nightmare to me, especially if they have suffered. Even though beloved pets die eventually, it's a part of life, and the what counts the most is the strong bond made between pet and owner over time.

But the main question is...
Does anyone have any idea what happened!? Why were those bugs there suddenly not too long after his death and what kind could they have been? I had some ideas, but I debunked the possibility of them. If anyone could at least give me an idea of what it could be, I'd appreciate it because I have two other piggys. They're healthy, but I would not like the same thing happen to them a long with any other illneses.

Thanks.

I'm very sorry to hear he passed away, very sad news.

How old was he?

From what you describe I would wonder about heart problems/heart failure. The dribbling and reluctance to eat often indicates dental/oral problems but from the general symptoms you've explained, I would suspect something heart-related. The lack of urine/faeces may have been tied in with the lower food/water intake.

He was about a year and a half old. I really have no clue.
His teeth were just fine, I checked.
I don't understand the white bugs either.

Aww. I'm so sorry for your loss. What a sad story :( Unfortunately, I have no idea what could have happened to him, but I'm sending my condolences to you and your two other piggies. xx RIP Reeses

So sorry for your loss, hope the little guy rests in piece. It is horrible when pets pass away and you are unsure of what they died of. This happened to me a couple of months ago. The little white bugs, were they about a mm long and like small maggots, if so it sounds like lice. Not the cause of death though I wouldn't of thought. The drooling could have indicated teeth problems. The hard thing to bear I guess is the not knowing, but sometimes when these things happen you are more prepared if these kind of situations arise again. We all learn alot from experience. Take care.x>>

Yes I thought lice with the bugs too - I've noticed this on one or two piggies at mine when they have died, they certainly didn't have them crawling on them when they were alive... it's odd.

I'm sorry to hear about your piggy.

Hi. I am sorry to hear of your loss, it is a very sad time indeed. I can't comment on why your little one passed away, as I'm new to being an owner myself, but I do feel for your sorrow having recently lost my little Daisy. Take care. XX

Thank you guys. We had made a nice simple cross, and also had these pretty fake flowers tied on the front of it pretty securely. It looks very nice. C:

Good to know the white bugs (fleas?) are common. I just found it very weird they pop up on a dead guinea not too long after it dies. Do they just appear out of thin air?

I really didn't like them on Reeses at all. The ones on him are probably dead now because I sealed him tightly in a zip lock bag with duct tape on the opening. Prefer them to die, then violate his body. :)>>>
