Can anyone help me with my Friday night confusion please?!

What is the difference between the two? Both contain ivermectin active ingredient, so is xeno 450 a brand name like Beaphar? Does it matter which you get? Are they the same dosages in the pipettes?

Thanks

Are you treating your piggies for mites? Have they been diagnosed by a vet? Just in case it's something else :)

You give it by weight, if they are quite light you need the xeno 50. Regarding the brands the Beaphar it's one you get of the shelf & it will have a lot of water in it so it's pretty useless. Xeno is expensive but it's very good, you can get it from the vet, P@H or Amazon. P@H are expensive though.

Hello.
We would not usually recommend treating on spec. If your piggies have a problem it is best to get the vet to diagnose it and give the correct treatment. Most OTC medication is not of sufficient strength to work effectively. The best thing to do is to get a vet to formally diagnose the problem and prescribe the correct treatment at the correct strength.

Thanks all. Yeah mites that had been treated but have returned, so not treated accurately enough I'm guessing (cycle wise) .... will get them sorted with the vet. I saw some beaphar prevention stuff at P@H though and wondered if it's worth using that as a prevention once they are clear again?

It really isn't any good, I'd steer away from it. You can only treat mites when they have them. If you give them things as a preventive they will become immune to it.

Please stay off the low dosed shop stuff like beaphar; it won't cut through the mites and at the worst promotes building up resistance to ivermectin in the longer term. It is much better to treat an acute outbreak with a proper product like xeno over a full course of three rounds. Most guinea pigs have eggs in their skin, which are usually kept under control by a fully working immune system.

Please do not treat on spec. Fungal, mange mites, dry skin and other skin issues can often look rather similar; if you treat wrongly or undertreat, you can easily make things worse. See a vet for a proper diagnosis.

Well, the vet prescribed ivermectin.. they are on two drops each, once a week for 3 weeks... :)
Vet also recommended giving them a preventative treatment once a month..... will just see how it goes.... We think the mites came with them when I got them, so hopefully this will be the end of them :mal:

They are a week and a half into their treatment now.. so cross fingers :yahoo:
