Piggeroo

Hello all, just a few questions really.
I've been wanting a GP for a few months now. But because I am having the house refurbed I've got to wait. Anyway in the mean time I am gathering heaps of information and really enjoying seeing all of your beautiful piggies.
Just one thing confuses me. ?
Alot of you say that GP's don't smell. Then I read that alot of you think they smell and need bathing because they sit in there wee and so on. Also when you hold them, do they wee on you (sorry to ask but never held or had one before).
The reason in why I ask is because my GP's will be indoor and I am happy to have them in a room of their own, but I just don't want them to smell the house out as I know my OH will probably have a fit if they do :(
Your HONEST opinion is much appreciated :D

My piggies don't smell unless they need cleaning out, i clean mine out every 2-3 days so that cuts back on a lot of the smell. Some piggies will wee on you when you hold them, its happened to me loads of time but you can always use a puppy training pad for them to sit on.

We keep ours in the house on Vetbed, and change the paper under it daily, as I find its the newspaper under it that smells when its peed on rather than the fleece. Apart from 'changing days' the house is about 98% pong free (and I have all boars!) I find its worse when they've just ejected some fresh poos (sorry), but most of the time, smell is not an issue. I make sure I disinfect or use vinegar most times they get changed as well, so that should cut down on the bacteria that cause any smells I hope.

I havent had a piggie wee on my for years! Having a said that the probarly will now! Mine used to squeak at me if they needed to go so i could put them down, whether it was pure luck, or they really were telling me ill never know!

As for the smell, mine dont smell unless they are well past they cleaning day, because ive been ill, or something! I went on hols once and asked my mum to piggie sit, but she wasnt very good at cleaning them out, and a s grateful as i was for her having them, they stunk to high heaven, took me days to get back to how they should be. If you have a good cleaning out routine i dont think you get a problem with piggie smell! I alwso have corner litter trays, which i fill with hay and as they spend most of their time chewing their hay, this is where most the mess is and it makes it easier toi just pick it up and remove it when cleaning them out!

I live in a studio flat with 7 boys! - soon to be 9!(piggies alas!) and change their newspaper every morning and clean them all out every night - or they would smell! Most of the time its actually the wet bedding that smells not the wee so change it daily and you'll be fine!

i have my 2 boars inside and they make a stink because they scent every five mins.. its disgusting! id say mine start to smell on day 2 i clean them every 2-3 days though.

I have three girls in my lounge and they absolutely do not smell. I keep them on newspaper and hay and change the whole thing every other day (It's very easy to just roll the newspaper with the hay in it).
I am very funny with smells and can assure you that if you change them regularly they will not smell. Saying that I have never had boars and they may be more smelly, I don't know.

I have 9 boars in one room. They dont smell but sometimes their bedding can get a bit wiffy. I get very worried about my house smelling so am a bit of a clean freak and clean my animals out alot. I have a friend who cant stand animals and is very honest and she says they dont smell even when in the guinea pig room. As for the peeing some of mine have never peed on me, a couple will give me a sign they need the toilet like nibbling at my clothes or trying to get down so i put them back in their cage but 2 of mine regulary pee on me. I have a couple of old towles that i use during lap time for these 2. They will actually cuddle right into me before peeing. Popcorn the other day was sat on my knee on his towel and ran up me curled up on my chest then lovingly peed all over me. ::)

when i said my boys smell, its not really obvious, just when you pick them up. their cage doesnt smell as i clean it out regulary, its jut that my boys just happen to be messy. they dont smell your house out, i have mine in my bedroom and they are fine.

they usually have their own way of letting you know they need to pee when you have them out of the cage. when theyre on my knee, my boys either start fidgeting or give my sleeve a little nibble, then i know they need too pee and want to go back to their cage.

you soon learn what their way of expressing it is, as if you dont put them back then they will pee on you. but you will soon learn how to tell when they need to go.

i also recommend using a towel on your lap just in case, especially if you dont know when they want to go back

I clean my boys wee corners evry day and completely change them once a week.
I have two pairs of boars. I have only smelt them once when we adopted Jimmy n Angel mini-pig,
Jimmy was scenting and it was minging.

As for being wee'd on, they have christened my son once or twice, but he probably had too long a cuddle time. ;D ;D

Thank you all so much for your honest answers. I didn't mean to sound rude, but I didn't know what other way to word it lol.
I will be thinking about getting sows so they won't be as messy as boys :P plus as it will be my first time for owning a piggy I think girls will be better as there not likely to fall out like the boars.

Thanks again though all. For all the people i have told I will be keeping them in the house they've pulled a face and said wow thats going to stink, and then say how much they stank from their past owning of a GP. It just confuses me.

Thank you so much x

I have 7 all in my bedroom, and they never smell!

I am so glad you have decided to go for it and get some piggies! Will you be getting them from rescues?

mine dont smell either unless they need cleaning out which is all the time?
lol messy
:) :) :) :)

We have ours indoors now, 2 females, and my husband is very sensitive to animal smells. Ours have to be cleaned out about twice a week and to be honest, I do think you can tell when it near to clean time again (not badly smelly, just that I can tell it will start to smell soon, if that makes sense?). If it was down to hubby he'd prob think they need to be cleaned even more regular ... but he's learning to live with it! ;D

Yes I do plan to have them from a rescue. I would love to have 2 teddy/rex sows. The main reason for getting them from rescue centre is because:
1. They need to be rescued.
2. They will be completely checked over before I get them, so I won't get any nasty suprises.
3. They might be a little more tamer for which is good for me being a new piggy owner.
4. and I have a loving home to give them :smitten:

The smell isn't a big issue and I will be getting into a routine. I've still got to wait a few months before I can get them. I still have loads of queries before I decide to get them though. Best for me to get all the relevant information I need before I jump in the deep end.
I'm so excited htough, just needed honest help and advice so if any of you have anything else to tell me please tell me :)

i find my piggies are clean when it comes upto cage cleaning time obviously the smell of wee can be sometimes strong depending how often you clean them out i clean mine out on a wednesday and a sunday usually and i dont smell them that much
