I got two sows a few months ago, my youngest is very comfortable with me but my eldest doesn't like being picked up, she scrabbles when I hold her and tries to run away. However, she also licks my hands and face a lot when I handle her, which I read was a sign of trust and affection. These two behaviours seem to oppose one another, does anyone know what all this means?

It means she is a normal pig!

She sounds to trust you and like you but most piggies will never like being picked up no matter how friendly they are in other situations, it’s just
the way they are wired.
And actually the fact she struggles to get away is just a further sign that she trusts you! She doesn’t like being picked up and isn’t afraid to say so. It’s the piggies who sit stock still when being held that are the most terrified and far too scared to defend themselves

When picking up my pigs, I say "scoop, scoop" in a gentle voice.

As they see others picked up and hear this, and are themselves, they learn what being picked up usually means I.e.: warm snuggles and fresh veggies. They get used to it and are usually happy to get picked up after a while. It does take time and consistency!
