Hello, I believe my guinea pig has got conjunctivitis in her left eye. I’ll attach pictures but they aren’t very good.
Thanks to COVID, my income has changed. I work in hospitality and I’m getting literally no hours at work. Therefore I can’t currently afford a vet visit on top of their prescribed treatment and tests.
Is there anything I can buy to treat her eye at home that won’t cost as much as a vet visit? I know some skin issues can be treated with human shampoo so is there anything I could use for her eye?
If not I’ll just have to save or borrow money so I can get her to the vets.

Her eye has a lot of clear gunk coming from it. When she opens her eye it’s stringy like attached to the top eyelid and to the bottom. If that makes sense? It’s swollen and red. This morning it looked like she was bleeding but now I’m not sure if that was just gunk over redness. She’s squinting and sort of tilting and bobbing her head. She won’t let me touch it to wipe it either. Other than this she seems completely healthy. It’s just the one eye.

I would borrow the money and get her seen. Eye treatment is the same for all animals so a general vet can see her.

:agr: She needs to see a vet.
How Soon Should My Guinea Pig See A Vet? - A Quick Guide

For clarity in anybody looking back at this post in the future, skin conditions also cannot be treated with human shampoo on spec because there are a variety of causes. A vet diagnosis is needed in every case of suspected illness of any cause.

Many vets offer payment plans. Unfortunately there is no cheap DIY alternative.

However, eye treatment is the same for all common pet species so you do not have to see an exotics vet; a no frills or no profit general vet clinic will do.

Am I able to treat her with the eye drops another one of my pigs was prescribed then?

No, because you cannot diagnose the issue. You could end up putting the wrong thing in and causing her problems. You need to always see a vet for diagnosis and to be given the correct and new treatment.

Oh I misread it as all eye problems are treated the same. Her eye seems to be better without treatment so maybe it was just irritated.

what was meant by that is that any vet can see an eye as ’eye problems are treated the same because all animals eyes are the same’, you don’t need a exotic specialist to check out eye issues like you ideally need an exotic to check other guinea pig related issues .

Eyes need treating, so please have her seen by a vet. Having an eye get better without getting treatment is very risky as you can’t know whether damage has been caused
