Hi,
Connie is 7 years old and on a 7 day course of baytril provided by my normal vet, on wednesday to treat her respiratory infection (heavy breathing, wheezes and crackles in lungs). I reckon it was brought on by the stress of her sebaceous cyst bursting + vet trip previous wednesday.
I am happy with the cyst wound and the antibiotics for the infection (waiting for improvement), however the vet did not recommend anything for the "bloat". In inverted commas because she does not show typical signs. She eats, drinks, moves around, poos and pees. She has fluctuating swelling of abdomen and does not have pain on palpation or handling (as confirmed by vet). However, knowing how serious potential bloat can be I feel worried about leaving this symptom unmedicated.
My question is what could be causing her swelling and is it worth seeking a second opinion before her follow up appointment on 22nd. Vet has already mentioned referral for imaging if no improvement but did not seem immediately concerned with her overall presentation on wednesday, I am also happy that she is stable right now and not worsening.

I would get a second opinoin if it gets any worse , or no better .
My piggy had bad bloat , once, and i used simethicone and it really helped .

Good luck piggie ! 🐹🐹

Thank you, getting her seen again today by either specialist or same vet and see what happens.

Hi!

I am very sorry; it is a difficult time when the immune system is getting weaker and losing its flexibility; and issues are building up.

Please take a deep breath. Whatever the bloating issues are caused by, it is definitely not serious bloat! That comes in full strength right on out of the blue - Connie would have gone downhill very quickly in a matter of hours and be most likely no longer alive if my own oldies that have had to be emergency pts for it are anything to go by. Believe me: you cannot mistake that!

Milder bloating issues in old piggies are pretty common; especially when the gut microbiome is additionally hit by an antibiotic. Baytril is well known for hitting the gut rather harshly.
Try to balance it out with probiotics and poo soup and see whether a more restricted veg diet may help.

How long has she been on the baytril? URI can take a week or more before symptoms come down again.

Hi all,
thank you for your replies. She has been seen by exotics specialist this afternoon - not great news.
Indeed, not true bloat, she has a huge mass one her liver with very little healthy tissue left. Combined also with the respiratory infection. She now has good medication and I will make sure she is comfortable until the time comes. (shes my profile picture bless her - she has go ahead for veggies on request!)

I am really sorry to hear this. Massive hugs to you and sending lots of love to you little girl x x
