Hi,

I'm new to the forum and although i've had lots of other animals, new to guinea pigs. I now have two girl GP's, who are 12 weeks old and seem very happy in their C&C cage and are popcorning alot, which I believe is a good sign. I give them endless supplies of meadow hay, science selective pellets and fresh water, as well as 2 types of veggies twice a day (romaine, bell peppers, carrot, cucumber etc). However, the last 24 hours, i've noticed their poo has changed slightly. It's still in pellet form and the same colour, but when I squash it between my fingers (with gloves on!), it's like plasticine. The GPs are happy and it's not getting trodden in the cage but i'm not sure if this is normal or if it should always be rock hard. I also completely change their bedding everyday so it's always pretty fresh.

Hope you don't mind me asking, but any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hey there, ive had this problem in the last week. There can be a few reasons

Too much watery veg. Cut out the veg for a couple of days and see if it returns to normal.

Gut problems. (these can range from easily treated with a probiotic top up to needing a trip to the vets)

Those are the two i know of but there can be more, and hopefully someone will be along to advise you soon. :D

Thanks Connie, i've just given them carrots and bell pepper today which I hope will make a difference tomorrow!

Unfortunatly you may not see a difference unless you cut out the veg completly and let there tummys settle. I tried cutting down, and less watery veg but there was no firm up till i cut them out all together! :(

Hi and welcome to the forum to you all :)
I'd be cutting out veggies for a day or so and giving them the unlimited hay, pellets and water :)
Enjoy looking around the forum, hope you can put some pigtures and a little story up about your girls in our stories/photo's section.
Whee have some really helpful info up the top of each section also.
I'll ask a mod to shift this post into health and illness so more people will be able to reply for you :)

Thanks to those who took the time to reply. I woke up this morning and alot of the GP poo were back to hard pellets, but there was some brown stained urine on the side of the cage, so I decided to take the GP's to the vet.

The vet was really nice and said the consistency of the poo was fine He said brown stained urine was also fine as long as there was no blood or any pain when the GP's were going. He also weighed them and said they were very healthy. He said I did the right thing bringing them in and he was happy to see them anytime. I am relieved!

I have a girl who has the same situation.

When I took her to the vet, she said that it's nothing to stress over. Those are the ones that they should eat and if they don't eat them, it just means that their poos are switched around and that in due time it will resolve itself.

My one girlie may need to go on a probiotic thing to switch it around for her. If it doesn't switch it around on its own, then go to the vet and talk to him/her about it.
