Or husks as they probably are technically!

What catagory of food do these come under? Rare, occasional or frequent?

My boys (and girl!) love them, and asda are doing 4 HUGE corn on the cobs for £1. The husks are super fresh, and they have sooo many leaves on them!

How often can I feed the husks (without the corn!)?

I know they can eat the lot, but i'm unsure of frequency.

Mine love these too! and I feed them about once a week apparently the sweetcorn is fatterning for them? just what I have heard!:)

Occasional; at the moment, mine are getting them fairly regularly as a seasonal veg, but throughout the year, sweet corn is more often a special treat.

There is always extra big excitement when chopping sounds come from the kitchen! :))

Corn on the cob is a high carb food so best to give it as a treat - I tend to think of it as a winter food (compare it to beef stew and dumplings ?/) Mine go crazy for them and I give them once a week which is a shame really as when they go out of season, that's it until around May :(
Got eight HUGE ones from Asda today, as you say, so fresh and the piggies will be tucking in tomorrow :(|)

Just to point out, I'm referring only to the leaves here - They're fat enough without eating corn on the cob too! They get it about once a month around pay day! I just ate mine - it was soooo good - I just zapped it in the microwave for a minute, perfectly cooked - no butter though, I'm back on the diet wagon!

During the season my 5 girls have a whole cob between them about once a week, out of season they have a mini-corn pack throughout the week about once a month

Thank heavens for mini sweetcorns eh :))
Actually, mine prefer the husks to the corn sometimes, depends on their mood rolleyes

The mini corn packs of 4 are ideal for my guys! I previously tried to cut a normal corn cob in half - i ended up with the hack saw out! Now my trio has been reduced to a duo, they're happy to share nicely, and we all know that Jeff and Cameo share too! Jeff and Cam carefully strip the leaves first, then eat the corn over a couple of days. Big Dave and Boxy (now he's had the all clear from diabetes yet again!) just go at it and eat leaves and corn from one side, then turn it over and start again - it's gone within a couple of hours!

Mine love the leaves/husks/whatever they're called! At the moment, they're getting a full leaf each most days (they're so cheap at the moment!), but not the corn itself, that's an occasional treat......om nom nom.....:))

I've searched and searched and searched, but I cannot find ANY nutritional info for the husks! The closest I can get is tamales, but I don't think the pigs want their husks filled with beef!

While I was searching, I did however, come across this, which may be very useful http://caloriecount.about.com/calories-vegetables-ic1100

It shows the Vit A, C and calcium levels of just about every fruit/veg

That thread seems to disagree with everything I've been told so far! :{
I've been told that they should have brocolli or Kale every day and they shouldn't have tomatoes in any form (too soft) or cucumber or lettuce as they're too high in water and might just give them the runs...

Can't win huh!

Kale can be fed regularly, broccoli not so frequently. They can have raw tomatoes, but they shouldn't be fed too often as they're quite acidic and can cause sores around their mouth. Cucumber is a favourite of most guinea pigs! As is lettuce - most lettuces are ok, but you should avoid iceberg lettuce.

Take a look here for some more info http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=42 and if you've got any questions, just ask, someone, somewhere on here will know the answer - always best to ask if you're unsure :)

Kale is high in Vit A. Broccoli shouldn't be fed every day as it can cause bloat if eaten in large quantities.

As for tomatoes & cucumber mine had them every day & they were fine, they are a good source of water which is good for them. Fresh greens & fruit may give them the runs so should be given sparingly. Anything in excess will give them dodgy tummies :)

XD This was me, I wanted to give them some but thought a whole one would be too much between the two of them so decided to split it... all I can say is the corn wasn't gonna beat me :(|).

Just wanna check are all the leaves on a corn plant good? We've got one outside but the corn is taking ages to mature so I don't wanna take the husk off it yet. And what about the steam?

and i'll throw a spanner in the works for you all......sorry

but i have a diabetic piggie so it's a big NO to corn..... but on the very very odd occassion say every few months i'll put a little of the corn silks and the corn husks (leafies) in their bowl, it literally gets wolfed down!

I think you'll find the leaves will be fine, as long as they're green....perhaps just peel off one leaf and feed it to them first off. The stems i'm not sure they'd bother with cause they tend to be dryer? tho as yours are fresh (well done for growing them) they might like a nibble on them! drool
