I have just had a message from a foster about this little chap called Albert, http://rspca-walsall.org.uk/newpages/albert.htm
He is a sad story and came to us in a terrible state which you can see in the link.
He went to the vets today after she noticed he was in some discomfort being groomed around the rear end. The vet saw some black skin and thinks it could be the start of skin cancer! He is going back in to have the coat shaved and they will have a closer look :(
Has anyone any experience of this?

I'm so sorry to hear this and wish I could offer you some advice but I have never experiences anything like this before. It's great that he now has someone to give him the care he needs. Hope someone can help and the visit to the vets goes well.

Poor Albert, what a cuttie.
I would think it's much more likely to be mites or a fungal infection. Has your vet considered either of these?

I haven't but he is such a gorgeous boy. I do hope it isn't cancer...keep us posted?

i think some piggies have different pigments it their skin sometimes. my maggie has different patches of skin colour, some black, some pink. x

special Granny kisses too xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo

Has he been neutered? If yes then get advice from a different vet at another practice before having fur shaved off ect. He could be impacted. Whatever is wrong needs sorting for this poor guy another vets view would help.

I'm not going to go get another vets opinion as this vet hasn't even had chance to have a good look at him yet. He is going to have a closer look and see what he thinks and we'll go from there with it. Just quite eager to see what he finds now.

Sorry to hear about Albert, Lucy. We were very taken with the photos of Albert, and how he came into you, when we were waiting for Milly and Molly. We kept looking at photos of them all on your RSPCA website.

Poor Albert. Bless him! Hopefully, it is just a different skin colour from the rest of his tummy and nothing to worry about. Some piggies have one pink ear and one black ear, some have one foot pink and the other white. Although having just looked at his photo again, apart from being dirty and matted, the area around his bottom looked pink.

I haven't ever had a piggy with skin cancer. I know that cats and dogs can get it, particularly on their ears, if a light colour. Could it be a fungal infection?
Please keep us posted how he gets on.

PS. Has Albert been rehomed yet?

Theres more to it than the skin colour. He is very uncomfortable in that area and it's also very greasy. We'll just have to see what the vets find :...

Well I stand by my other post and say it could be impactation which is what it sounds like. Its easy enough to check for your self and deal with but it not a nice thing to have to do but have done it for my Oakley, a few weeks after he was neutered. I would of discribed it the same way as you Lucy as it sounds the same symtoms.:)

The way you are describing the colour, texture, position, etc it sounds like it is the grease gland you are describing. Piggies don't usually like having this area cleaned which could be why he is showing signs of discomfort.

Albert is with an experienced guinea pig person. She says it's not impaction and this is a new thing so she doesn't think it's the greas gland. Hopefully we'll get some answers tomorrow.

Just wondered how albert was doing it was funny i was just looking at his details and wondered if he had found a home or if he had been paired with another pig yet as i was condsidering possible adding to the gp family at mine
