Cozzie has a poorly eye. It looks like a huge cataract (but that can't come up overnight surely?) and the eye is gunky, a bit red, and screwed up. Cozzie won't open it and hates it being touched. Cozzie was distressed going into the travelling hutch earlier. I am very upset. The eye looks like Dr and Scarby's eyes when they had died - sunken and not there. We have a vet appt at 5.40.

Could it be a hay poke Lucinda? These usually happen "overnight" & the eye goes cloudy, which is it healing itself. Hope Cozzie's ok at the vets, thinking about you both x

Try not to worry too much Lucinda, I'm sure it'll be fine. Maybe just a bit of a haypoke? Very often these things look worse than they are. So pleased you are able to get to the vets that quickly though.

Remember that eyes heal incredibly well - let us know how you get on.

Sending you positive thoughts :) :)

We're all here for you x x x x x

Hope all will be ok! Sunny had a hay poke in his eye last week but it is nearly better now.

Let us know xx

Yes sounds like hay poke. I find that cooled boiled water followed my antibiotic eye drops from the vet is the best course of action. when one of mine woke up with a cloudy eye though, it was a sign that it was starting to ulcerate. the blue cloudy tint was an ulcer starting to form. antibiotic drops did the trick though. x

I can't stand eye problems either, Lucinda. Nothing makes me squirm more! With it clouding over suddenly, and being sunken, it certainly sounds like an injury. Most likely to be a hay poke, as others have said, though other issues can be the cause. Optrex Infected Eyes are a good over-the- counter solution, since they contain Chloramphenicol - what most vets would presribe - but obviously a vet check would be advisable to ensure it is just a bit of a poke.

Willa got bitten on the eye when I first got her - the first eye problem I've had to deal with. Hers clouded over, was bloodshot and you could see a white scuff mark where naughty miss Meghan nipped her. She was back to normal within a day of starting the Optrex ointment. Willa's injured eye was very sensitive to light; keeping the room a little darkened will encourage the pig to open the eye a little and let it heal faster.

Good luck with him, let us know how he gets on.

Thanks for all the advice everyone.

It was a thorn from the hay bag. Poor Cozzie yelled when Roger was draining the abscess years ago, but today was even worse. I have never heard a guinea scream like it. It was awful. We saw a different vet to usual and he was lovely, very kind and sweet with Cozzie (even when he got bitten) and removed a horrible thorny thing, rinsed and bathed the eye and has given us cream to use.

Straight away Cozzie was a different pig and back to normal, squeaking happily, not biting me, not all hunched in the corner.

Poor Cozzie, what a birthday.

Thanks for the tip about the darkened room. I will try that.

Oh, ouchie, poor poor Cozzie! That sounds awful. I have gone even more squeamish now. rolleyes

I hope he's back to normal very soon. xx

Poor Cozzie, you did amazingly well getting to the vet so fast, that must have been extremely painful....

Glad to hear Cozzie is sorted now, poor little mite.

Love to you both x

Thank you everyone.

Cozzie enjoyed his birthday/ bravery treat (a strawberry) and is now bumbling round much more happily.

Toony was great as a nurse too.

I missed this! I hope Cozzie is recovered well x

Cozzie's eye is back to normal pretty much. As is Cozzie - all bouncy and popcorning again!
