Hi this is mainly a vent. So when I got up yesterday morning I noticed my piggy’s were making that chest infection sound it reminds me of owl sound, also my new little piggy has developed a small bald patch on her back in the past week. So I make a appointment at pets at home get to the vets the vet seems erratic and rushed she put the thing that doctors use to check your heart not sure of the name but she said chest was clear ? Both my pigs r deffo making that noise the new one was the worst. Then the vet said they could have the flu, I thought how can u have the flu with a clear chest it didn’t sit well with me. She said the patch was fungal but seems to be growing back well so she should be fine ill give you some cream. All fine wasn’t the best but I accepted it she said she would give me a week of antibiotics just in case and the cream. So it gets to paying time they’ve given me the tiniest tiniest bit of meds in the world won’t last 3 days and she’s said I'm meant to Give new pig 0.14 and big pig .024 when in the past I’ve given nearly a full syringe at 0.80. They didn’t bother giving me any cream and then the cherry on the cake was they are going to start charging me for a consultation for both pigs, when for 2 and a half years they have always only charged me for 1 consultation I’m there on average every 6 weeks with different things and I’m literally in the room 2 mins at the most. I'm still reeling. In future I'm just going to straight to the exotic vets. I’m going to have to buy some fungal cream from chemist xx

Sounds like the vet isn't particularly savvy but you have also been lucky in the past with the charges as I have always been charged for 2 consultations when taking two piggies in

Oh well I’ve only ever been charged for 1 consultation so I thought that was normal with 2 pigs. I only took my dying pig on her own to the exotic and then new pig on her own once so I really didn’t know and don’t understand the sudden change, going to get some proper cream sorted today I don’t want it to get worse. Thanks xx

Please don’t use cream. You need it looked at by another (more experienced) exotic vet. Home treatment can make it worse and won’t help if it’s not what you’re treating.

You have to be extra careful with fungal infections especially if it is ringworm. I would see another vet before you go buy anything.

I’m sorry you’ve had that experience. I think some of the p@h associated vets are a bit hit and miss.

Seems like you have had a bad experience but our vets4pets are very good. Usually you can say which vet you want to see too. It is usual to pay a consult fee for each animal, and definitely a fungal infection requires prescription treatment. Did you say you weren't happy with the advice given at the time?

Ohh I'm sorry to hear that. You have been given good advice please follow :) and I had a bad experience with Pets at home vets a few months ago. Basically my old childhood dog gets his nails cut regularly at various vets and has never had any problems, although he doesn't like the process due to having his nails cut too short in the past. It was the first time we went to the Pets at home vets and they refused to cut his nails without putting him under anesthesia, we weren't very impressed because he's 13.5 years old don't really want him going under for that at his age especially to have a simple trim. Good luck! Xx

Thankyou for your replies. I have thought about it and they are usually really good with me and my pigs so maybe I’ve over reacted. The money isn’t a issue I love my babies so much I was just shocked. I’ve got a appointment at exotic about this bald patch they can’t get me in till Monday coz it’s not a emergency they’re always very busy I’m thinking it’s mange mites now been reading loads online. I’ve seen loads of ringworm on my dead pig and polly it’s always been the ears and legs that are affected. I’ll attach a pic of piggy’s back coz I’m 95% sure it’s not fungal now xxAABBF2DB-CB35-4F7D-88A4-B79899AD6EFE.jpeg

It really is impossible to tell from a photo, but it clearly needs treatment so it's good you have an appointment booked with a specialist.

Glad you got an appointment with an exotics. All the best for Monday and let us know what they say. Hopefully it is something simple to treat.

With regards the consultation cost, does it state anywhere on their website that they will charge you per piggy or pair?

I’ve never really looked on the websites to be honest at exotic vet consultation is £49 not too bad if I’m just taking the new one. at first pets at home we’re paying for ringworm treatments for like 6 months and I kept going again and again. I just assumed as pigs have to live with another pigs they sort of come as a pair I didnt realise vets were basically doing me a favour with 1 consultation fee. Their chests sound a lot better today so I'm very relived about that I’ll keep giving the batryl. Will update on Monday Thankyou xx
