I've been meaning to buy some critical care for emergencies for a while now, I just got around to it now I'm building my first aid kit to suit a pregnant pig and I'm confused.

What type of critical care and what amount is recommended? Just wanted to ask what has worked for others before ordering the wrong thing

Thanks :)

I've found the piggies I've had to syringe feed have prefered Science Recovery Plus, which is also the one recommended by the vets exotic vets I go to. They would - its the most expensive
Sounds about right. My pigs always seem to be able to sniff out the most expensive stuff

Can critical care/science recovery plus be used if the babies won't take the fake milk?

For emergencies I always have Recovery Formula on hand - it is liked by most of my pigs.
When we start what i feel will be long term syringe feeding I usually get Critical Care too to add some variety. I prefer the fine grind becasue it is easier to mix and syringe into a reluctant pig (I am looking at you Ruby) but in general they seem to prefer the regular.

I don't know, I've never had real babies. Hopefully an expert will be along soon.

Mine also prefer the Science Selective recovery food, the Oxbox critical care has a confusing number of varieties and flavours and it smells like poo! I like the smaller sachets you get with the Selective too. No idea about babies though!

Not an expert but I hear that if some of the newborns don't take to milk I KMR works. Granted I've only heard this with smaller rodents (hamsters, gerbils, mice, etc.) so take this with a grain of salt but it would probably be better than critical care.

I don't have any experience with Critical Care myself but I recommend getting the flavored kind if possible (I believe it's apple flavored?). I've heard some really hate the regular kind and refuse it. You could probably flavor it yourself, though.

Thanks :) I might get both just in case

Mine all love Oxbow Critical Care.
When Phoebe had her op and was past needing syringe feeding but did need a bit of an extra boost I put a ramekin dish with Critical Care in the cage.
Neither of the little noses in the dish belonged to Phoebe!
She was lucky if they left her any.
Micah loved it with added mashed banana.

My piggy medicine box also contains some syringes of different sizes, a bottle of Hibiscrub, some cotton buds and cotton wool.

Aw I had a similar issue once with trying to encourage a baby to eat a little more (either babies booting her off mum. I left a ramekin of mushed pellets in the cage and the mum stole it all

Mine didnt really like oxbow critical care so i crushed some of their pellets up and added some oats ( not instant ones) some vitamin C (childlife vitamin c) and probiotics to keep there system going whilst on baytril, then i add a little water they love it soo much better than oxbow

Before you go buying too much it's worth remembering that these items do go out of date.o tend to go for mushing pellets in an emergency and then ordering the supplementary feed if necessary but then I have Amazon prime so I know I can order and it will turn up the next day
