Hey y'all,

Just a quick question about crusty eyes. I know pigs normally get it when they're down.. My Vincent is unwell with a UI which we're treating now, and his eyes are really quite crusty in the morning.. he's impatient about the meds but he doesnt mind having his eyes tenderly cleaned by me :)

The thing is, since we've adopted him I can't think of a time he hasnt had a little bit of crust in the corners. I clean his eyes every couple of weeks.. its a slow build up, sometimes he gets it with his back leg when he scratches his face. But Leeland and V-man don't groom each other generally so she doesnt get it for him. We had him vet checked whenn we got him, we were given ear drops to reduce his ear wax, but everything else was bon!

Anyone else noticed this in their 3yr+ guineas?

I have had several guinea pigs in the past... and also now with Sky who always seem to have crusty eyes. I mean this hasn't occurred over the years, since they were quite young I have had to clean their eyes. I don't worry about mine as they don't show any other signs of respiratory problems etc and some animals just tend to get more of a build up of 'sleep' in their eyes than other. My horse has slightly blocked tear ducts so we have to clean her eyes every day as they go all crusty.

Hope Vincent is better soon!

I used to have to clean the eyes of one of my past guinea pigs, but apart from her eyes, she was absolutely fine. I hope your piggy recovers soon. :)
