Well, as many of you know I was blessed with 6 gorgeous mini-pigs a few days ago. Sadly, one of them passed away this morning and another one looks like he's not long for this world. :(

A couple of the babies seems to have had crusty eyes - I'm a little worried that the baby that died wasn't because he was underdeveloped or runty, but because of infection. He was making a little clicking noise, and suffering form laboured breathing (as is the other one currently) but the others only seem to be suffering from crusty eyes. Not...horribly crusty, just like they have too much sleep in them! It comes away when I bathe them gently...

We are taking a trip to the vet tomorrow with their daddy (who is going to get checked out for neutering) and I shall discuss it with the vet then, as I am relucant to move the babies around as of yet as they're under a week old! But I was wondering if anyone had experienced anything like this before?

Sorry to hear one of the little ones passed away, unfortunately with a large litter like 6 it is quite common.

The clicky breathing sounds like fluid on the lungs or an infection, possibly. If the others have clear breathing and are eating ok and gaining weight, then they're all good signs. Have you weighed them? Definitely worth doing to put your mind at rest, then you know they are putting on weight.

If one looks a bit weak then have the mum out on your lap and let her feed just this one by itself a few times a day, or supplement its feed with lactol (powdered milk for animals) either let it lap from a spoon (don't syringe) or soak bread in it and let them suck it, or a cotton bud.

I've never had babies with crusty eyes before but again could be sign of infection. Mum should be cleaning them really, is she looking after them?

Hope all ok at the vets,

Sophie

awwwww love ((((((((((((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))))))))))))))))))) and lots of loves from me xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
I'll be thinking of you xx

I'm so sorry to heat about your loss. It sound like it probably is an infection. I'll keep my fingers crossed for the rest of your mini pigs xx

Ah sorry to hear that, does sound like an infection. Perhaps the fluid in the eye is conjunctivitis. Birthing fluid may have gotten in the eye when they were born. Keep us posted on how they are! x

Sorry to hear about one of your mini pigs passing away. Six is a large litter and sometimes unfortunately they don't all survive.

A clicky noise is usually coming from the lungs - bless him.
As regards the crusty eyes ... do the eyes close over because of the crustiness? Or the eyes bright?
I have been having a problem with two mini pigs born last week (Ant and Dec). They have eyelashes rubbing on their eyeballs which makes the eyes water. It didn't start until a couple of days after the birth (over Christmas when the vet was shut!) rolleyes but looking better now after I bathe and massage their eyelids back twice a day.

A visit to the vet is a good idea as it could be an infection.
Keep us posted.

Well, sadly this morning another little baby had travelled to the rainbow bridge. :(

So today we whisked off to the vets, and all of you were right - the wee bubba's have a respiritory infection. It is worse in some than others, (the two strongest have the clearest chests) but they all got a wee jab of baytril and I've been given baytril to put in the water - I'm assuming this is because mum will pass it on through the milk? The crusty eyes seem to be connected to the infection. So here is hoping they will all pull through!

Emily is a fantastic mum, she lets me have my prods and my looks, but when I'm finished, she rushes over and checks the bubbas to make sure I haven't stolen any!

Thanks everyone for your well wishes, and I shall keep updated on the babies condition (at the moment we're all hiding under mum after going to the horrible person that jags us)

So sad about the losing the little ones but hopefully now the others will go from strength to strength especially with them being such a great mum and you being a fabulous midwife/fosterer.

Keep up the great work Susie.

Much love
Helen.

Let's hope the littlun's perk up now they're being treated, keep us posted!

Not sure about putting it in the water, you won't know how much they've had then and I doubt the babies are drinking water yet?
