I was fixing my piggies cage today and decided to take my newer pig ( Bean) out for some lap time since I hadn't been able to do it for the past few days due to homework and class. When I took her out I noticed that her right ear was crusty and felt hard and it was kind of white. I just cleaned their cage two days ago, granted I had to coax her into her tube to get her out - I didn't notice anything different, but maybe I just didn't see it. Anyways she's acting normal- running, eating, drinking and my other pig is perfectly fine, neither of her ears or skin seem to be bothered. But I'm not sure if I should take her to the vet or if there is something I can try at home first.

The first picture is with flash so you can see it better but the second picture is more accurate as far as coloring goes. I believe she is an Abyssinian, her fur is all little rosettes. Should I schedule a vet appointment asap or is there something at home I can try first?

I would get a vet visit this could well be a fungal infection x

A vet appointment is the best thing. A vet would rather see an anxious owner with a piggy with nothing wrong than an owner with a piggy who has left it too late. That is not saying that there is anything wrong or not wrong with your piggy. Only a vet can diagnose that.

Thank you, everyone! I'm going to get her into the vet this week and will post updates once I do!

Hiya :)

My new piggie had the same and I took him to the vets last week for this! The vet said because he'd had mites once (he's only 2 months old and was a rescue) it's probably from the mites. So he prescribed me some proper anti-parasite drops to put on the back of his neck and that he should be fine. He seems fine and his skin all over is improving so hoping that will do the trick :)

So yes worth a vet trip so they can give you the proper drops for them :)

So we are home from the vet! Turned out to be fungal and I have meds to give to her once a day. She is also quarantined until she finishes her meds and I cleaned the other cage. I feel so bad now that they have to be apart again!

At least now you know what you’re dealing with and have the treatment for her.
Hope she recovers quickly
