Marley in the past few days has developed a crusty (it's dry) white mark below his left eye. It doesn't seem to be bothering him but I am concerned. Pic below

I'm debating whether a vets trip is in order....but it does stress him out so much to be away from his ladies so I'm not sure if that would do more harm than good.....

It is worth checking whether it's fungal or just dried stuff from his eye. I can't see that from this picture. If it isn't from his eye, please see a vet.

If it turns out to be ringworm, you need to isolate Marley and treat all piggies in your group at first to prevent it from spreading. You will also need to disinfect everything with F10 (antifungal disinfectant). Use good hygiene - ringworm is one of the few things that can spread to humans and other species of pets.

I've just had an outbreak of ringworm in my Tribe, and it wasn't exactly fun, even tough I could keep it to the one affected piggy...

PS: I always take a "paw holding" companion (or the whole trio) with me - much less stressful for the piggies.

I have just been to the vet, and am very disappointed!

She didn't really know what it was, but she did get a special light thing out and from that she ruled out fungal.

She asked if I treated for mites and I said yes every 2-3 months and I literally did it last week, but then she didn't know anything about the treatment I used (Beaphar one). She wanted to treat him again as she thought it may be mites but then they didn't have any mite treatment in stock mallethead. I asked her what specific mites she thought and she dodgled the question, then I said 'do you think it's selnick mites?' and she said yes it might be (they look nothing like what he has I just asked her to test how much she actually knew at this point grrrr)

So she just said keep an eye on it......

£15 consultation fee for nothing, I think a change of vet is definitely in order. Now I'm not sure whether to try another vet to see what they say :(

Hi there

Is there a white, dusty look to the ear, any build up of crustiness inside? It's a pretty typical place for ringworm to start.

Another possibility is a nip from a cagemate as a healing scab can look like fungal in it's very early stages.

A Wood's lamp (black light) only shows up some forms of fungal problems so it can't be used to rule it out, only to confirm if it does fluoresce.

I agree your vet didnt handle it well. But sometimes they truely do not know what it is.
By keeping an eye on it then it may well just go or develop a little. There is no point in treating your piggie with unecessary treatment just for the sake of it when it isnt bothering him. Beaphur spot on contains ivermectin so you are covering this side of treatment which is good. It could be any a simple as dried on eye cleaning fluid. If it isnt bothering him then i would agree to keep a close eye on it.

My piggie Snowball has had this for months now, 3 different vets have seen it and they aren't concerned about it, as it's not bothering him. They all told me to just bathe the eye regularly, as sometimes his eyes become 'sticky'. One vet did suggest we buy some drops for the eyes in case of infection, we bought them and his eyes did clear up. But a few weeks later it came back again.
I wouldn't worry too much if i were you:)

Surely if the eyes clear up with drops its telling you its an infection?

Yes, that's what we got confused about. As after months of this problem the vet decides to then give drops after we've been several times. Not sure if it's worth buying the drops again though as they just crust up after a couple of weeks.:^-

Ok, thanks for your replies.

I'm now beginning to think it may actually be fungal - looking at him today and that photo which was taken yesterday, it seems to look a bit worse. When I first got Mabel she had a terrible fungal infection between her ear and eye so I've got Vetericyn, Miconazole cream (Daktarin) and Clotrimazole cream from that.

I wouldn't be that confident about putting creams that close to his eye however....

I may leave it for a day and then try and look at it again and get another picture - he is in a real grump with me now so don't want to stress him out further today
