Hi there, I've just got myself two piggies and although I had a couple as a kid I consider myself a bit of a beginner. My piggies, Ben and Jerry, absolutely love cucumber but I'm worried I might give them too much and make them ill. Can someone please advise me on the appropriate amount. Thanks folks, Jo

My gang get about 5 slices of cucumber each a day. On really hot days I'll also give them a thick wedge each straight from the fridge. About an inch of cucumber cut into 5 wedges.

My guys eat it like it is going out of fashion and in a fairly large portion each time with no problem. It will depend on your piggy though. If they are prone to squishy poos or getting a bit runny then you need to reduce the amount of watery veg like cucumber.

Can I just ask, I'm slightly concerned about the photo in your avatar. That's not their actual cage is it? Was it just been used for transporting them perhaps? That's an IMAC Fantasy hamster cage and absolutely not suitable for piggies. Just incase you weren't aware.

Hi there, no this was a temporary home while I was still at my sisters (2 days) I got them a 120cm x 60cm Ferplast indoor cage as soon as I got home. They are now happily charging around like there's no tomorrow! I 'adopted' them Friday evening and I was brought home Sunday morning and collected the new cage on the way. But thanks for being concerned. I can assure you they are happy and healthy!

Because of their high water content, cucumbers are especially appreciated in hot summer days. They are harmless for guinea pigs and could be fed every day, however they have little nutritional value.

I don't think Ben and Jerry care about nutrients! They just love cucumbers and I think they would eat a whole one if I gave them it!
