Hi,

After just losing a pig we are reassessing how we influence their lifestyle. The last maybe 10 years our pigs have been on the Burgess Excel Mint nuggets but I am wanting to maximize their health in part with what nuggets (and how much we give them; at the moment way too much).

I was just about to pick up the Science Selective grain free then I read a few threads that put me off, including some that said the soya in them could be concerning or that after switching they had a spate of bladder/urinary problems and they don't trust them!

I have tried to get hold of JR Farm nuggets but at the moment I cant find them anywhere for delivery to UK.

The Versele Laga nuggets although seem very highly rated by others, the main ingredient is a vegetable by product? Is that of concern?

Just wondered where people stood with grain free nugget preference and if they have any success stories with them?

I am interested in this too. I used to feed Cavy Cuisine but had a bad spate of bladder issues (stones and cystitis) and heard this food could contribute to that, so changed to Science Selective. Then read that grain less was better so switched (and they Love it!) but then read the same as you, so very confused! I have been using grainless for about two years now and all seems fine but I do feed it very sparingly.

There is some talk about the soy in the grain free being problematic - I don’t know the full details though but I know @piggieminder avoids soy on vet advice and it certainly got me wondering

I switched from burgess to ss grain free, then switched to haybox own pellets (I have haybox hay so having their pellets as well was ideal - the haybox pellets are just made from grasses and nothing else but they aren’t vit c fortified). I now feed a mix of haybox pellets and the Burgess pellets

We're happy on the Burgess excel but blackcurrant flavour goes down a lot better than mint. I buy posh bottled soft water for them as in our area the kettle-scum is terrific! Our vet actually stocks the pellets which I hope is a vote of confidence (?!)

I had forgotten about Burgess and the black currant flavour. I used this many years ago with a completely different herd and they loved it!

Mine liked the Hay Box pellets the first time I bought them, the second time they were refusing to eat them. My vets sells Burgess pellets as well @Free Ranger .

Thank you all for the input, maybe for now I will stick to the Burgess but I might mix in the Verselle laga food until I gather more current thinking
