Okay, so just a few minutes ago I was cutting my Guinea pigs nail. She was calm and was happily eating. But then she moved and I cut her quick! Now I don't know what to do as this is the first time. Can someone tell me any advise or anything. Thank you

If it's still bleeding there are a few things you can do to stop the bleeding. Some cornflour or plain flour in the end will help it clot. I have also used a bar of soap - press the claw into the soap to get a clot of soap on the end, again this will help seal it. It will grow back again, don't worry. But your piggy may take a little while to forgive you!

Oh thank you. My mother was crying because she thinks ive killed Tammy. I have a feeling Tammy does this to get way more attention then what she has already o-o

I am not an expert but it has happened to me. I felt as though I was going to faint!. Luckily it stopped bleeding fairly quickly. Just leave your guinea pig to settle and you should be able to see if there is still bleeding on the clean fleece.
I am going to tag an expert who hopefully can reassure you further @Wiebke @VickiA

Thank you. I'm just all over the place right now.

If you can keep her calm and still so she doesn't keep moving on it, it should stop bleeding and clot over. If it is still actively bleeding then you will need one of you to hold her (perhaps your mum) while the other tries to apply some soap or cornflour to the cut tip. You will then need to just keep her still and distracted (dandelion or some other treat) long enough while you keep holding her and keeping her off the foot until it stops. It will stop eventually. It just is a horrible shock.

Thank you so much x

One of my pigs once ripped a nail off at the foot- could not believe the amount of blood. Try to keep her calm (maybe give her a snack) and apply some gentle pressure. You can try dipping the nail in flour to help it to clot. Encouraging her to be calm and still will help to stop the bleeding as well. After it finally stops, keep an eye to make sure there is no infection (though I've never had infection after a cut quick- it happened more than once to my pigs with dark nails.) Hope this helps a bit!

Thank you. It seems to stop bleeding but I'm worried if she makes it bleed in the night (as there outside i cant go out in the middle of the night) I'm keeping so many towls in the hutch incase it does bleed she can rest it on the towl

See a vet asap if the bleeding doesn't stop after 10-15 minutes, which it is usually does.

First, calm down yourself and then calm down your piggy. If you can get to it, try to stem the bleeding with some flour or corn flour or a styptic pen.

Disinfect with a mild disinfectant once the bleeding has safely stopped and things have stabilised again, like saline solution or hibiscrub etc.

A nail that has been cut too deeply or ripped off completely can bleed profusely and can really panic you, but thankfully it usually heals off well without any major problems although a ripped off nail can grow back funny or not at all; it doesn't hinder the piggy.

It happens don't worry. It has happened to me & probably a lot of piggies. Boy can they scream.
I'm going to get one of those styptic pens just in case.

It should stop, it always looks worse, for next time get a styptic pen, I got one from my vet for between £3 and £4, at least then your prepared if it happens again.
