Hi All,

I've just brought Cuzzy in (3 month old Sheltie Boar) and I was going through his coat checking for mites and noticed a red patch on his rear end. I got hubby to look as I held him and it's not a lump (nothing sticks out when you stroke him) but if you lift up his coat at the back you can see redness which seems to have whiteish bits on where it is healing it was a little like dandruff. Hubby does think it is an injury rather than a mass.

I am thinking that he was bitten on his rear end by a bigger pig in P @ H as there where bigger pigs in with him when I got him. This would explain why he is quite skittish and runs off when approached and doesn't like you holding him and isn't forth coming when you offer food from the hand.

Other than that he is eating, drinking, popcorning, running and behaving like my other two pigs. He doesn't seem to be in pain although he isn't keen on you touching the area.

I will make an appointment for the vet tomorrow just to be on the safe side but would like some reasurrance (if possible) for now.

Thanks in advance,

Louise

It is always advisable to take an animal to the vets if you are unsure, so thats good :)
Sounds like it could be either mites or a fungal infection but hard to tell without seeing it. Often the two go hand in hand. I wouldnt think it is anything more serious than that but hope all goes well at vets tomorrow.

Sounds like a fungal infection to me,possibly even ringworm.
Gorgeous Guineas have brilliant products for skin problems.,and if you email Chrissie she will advise you what to use.

Do not let the vet do a skin scrape because this is an expensive waste of time and is uncomfortable for the piggy.

Hiya,

Thanks for the advice, I've got an appointment at 3:30pm. Someone suggested it could be the grease gland but I think it could be a bit too high. Doesn't look as red today but will whizz Cuzzy up and take it from there. If he does have some kind of infection then I will be claiming his treatment money back from P @ H. :)

Will post when I have news!

Thanks again!

Hi Guys,

Just got back. Cuzzy has mites! Vet said they aren't bad but my poor little man has had an injectionm he yelled a little but is now fine. I've had to put him in a cage and he looked a bit sad about that but he is eating his mix now and seems bright. It's nice to have him inside to be honest, he can get to know us better and become tamer, I know he misses his buddies but he'll be with them soon. I've just read him a story so he gets used to my voice and he seems quite happy! I know I'm mad! :)

I have to take him back in 10 days (next Friday 10:30am) for another injection and then in a further 10 days. I will check Sunshine and Twinkle this evening so keep your fingers crossed they are fine. If not then I can seperate the hutch.

I'm also going to e-mail P @ H and demand the money from them! Cuzzy is still insured with them as I only got him a week last Friday! Wish me luck, I don't fancy my chances but God loves a trier!

I'm going to look at Gorgeous Guineas now and order some shampoo for my other two, they seem fine but I'm just making sure.

Will keep you updated, thanks for all your help, really appreciated!

I would put him straight back with his friends, chances are they have it as well and it would be a good idea to get them treated too. they should all have a bath/Melt and the cage be thoroughly cleaned :)

My vet uses xeno 450 spot on now to treat mites. It saves them having to have an injection. They give me the 2nd and 3rd application to do at home so it also saves having to go back to the vets.

Hi Thanks,

I think I will put Cuzzy back and treat the others. He is eating better this morning but still he looks a little lost! :)

Thanks,

Louise

Ivomec can be given orally day one and ten, treats burrowing mites too because they are blood suckers.
