So our new guy Maurice has visited the vets this evening as he had a lump on his back end. The vet says it's a cyst and that it's not really bothering him but we are going to have it removed next Friday as it is filled with brown goop and could grow so it's best to tackle it while he's doing ok. I'm stressed because it's an operation but it's also not as bad as it could have been. Has anyone got any experience of this to share, how they did with recovery?

Hi

As the cyst is nowhere near any tricky location and is nicely encapsulated, the operation should be pretty quick and problem-free.

I've had several emergency lumpectomies, two in 6 year old sows who both made a full and problem-free recovery and live to celebrate their 7th birthday.
Tesni had a infected burst sebaceous cyst right next her genitals, which could not be left and Hafren's monitored cyst suddenly started growing very quickly and promptly burst while my piggy savvy vet was on summer holiday, so I had to wait for two weeks until the cyst could be operated out. Again, despite her age concerns (one month before her 7th birthday), the cyst could not be left as it was.

Here is our post-op care guide, which will talk you through the whole process; it is always wise to be prepared for trouble and to be relieved when all goes without a hitch!
Tips For Post-operative Care

Tomorrow Maurice is going in for his lump removing, I'm getting very nervous for him and Harold who has to spend the day in the vets. Please everyone keep everything crossed for us we don't want anymore upsets this year!
I hope it's the right thing to get it removed, the vet didn't think it was too much of an issue for him but it is bigger than a marble so I think that's quite large and he's healthy so I felt it best to tackle now. But it's stress for him and risky with the anaesthetic 😬 these guinea pigs are really testing me!

Fingers firmly crossed - but unless the cyst is in a difficult to reach part of the body, the operation should be straight forward and pretty quick - and that generally also means an easier recovery.

Maurice had his operation yesterday, all went well but the poor thing was definitely not happy. We went back this morning as they wanted to check the wound. He's a lot brighter today and we have pre loaded syringes with metacam incase we need them. Then back for a check up in a week and stitches out in two weeks, hopefully.

Wishing hm a good recovery!

The first day or two after an operation are when the operation cocktail (which includes painkillers) is running and the body is feeling sore but has not started healing yet. From then on in every day should be better and your boy is hopefully back to normal soon!

Sending healing wheeks for Maurice, and hugs for you- glad the surgery went well, hopefully now he's 24h post op he's over the worst of things and will make a smooth recovery x

Glad all went well for Maurice and hope he makes a speedy recovery.
It is an anxious time for us when our beloved piggies need surgery.

Thanks guys, I have felt very guilty as he's only been with us two weeks yesterday and he's now wounded I hope this will heal quickly and problem free so he can enjoy his life with us. I feel like a monster at the moment.

Oh you shouldnt feel bad, you got him prompt and good vet care and are looking after him, so many people would have returned him to where he came from after finding out he arrived needing the vet and an operation! I really hope he makes a good recovery and rewards you with years of future piggy happiness, the ones who cause you most anxiety and vet bills at the start are often the most rewarding in the long run x

No need to feel guilty.
When I rescued Micah who had been bullied and was a pathetic scrap he had 2 ops in quick succession.
He was neutered and then barely a week later a second op for a scrotal abscess.
He is now a happy, lively boy full of energy who enjoys life with his 3 wives.

Maurice will soon forgive you as soon as he feels secure in his new loving home

*Update* Maurices stitches have come out, the blame is lying with Harold! He's been rushed back in this morning and will have to go back under GA and have the wound cleaned and re stitched. We had an option of sticking a honey dressing over and letting the wound heal that way but we run the risk of it not closing so I said no. I am so stressed now and I made the choice of not leaving Harold with him in there because I don't want him bothering the wound anymore! I don't know if I've made the right choices but I had to make them quickly and with not even had a cup of tea in me! 😢

Oh no poor Maurice, maybe having them living separate but as close neighbours for a week or so is a good plan, so they can still chat and stay friends without Harold getting too inquisitive about the stitches x

Poor you and poor Maurice.
@PigglePuggle has made a good suggestion
If they can live side by side temporarily that will give Maurice a chance to heal without breaking the bond.

We are home with Maurice and we have separated him from Harold, I'm concerned he will pull at the stitches now, has anyone ever experienced this? What can be done to stop this?
Our vets are not guinea savvy and are at a loss for any ideas, I feel very helpless and stressed about it all

Ok he is pulling at it! I really need some help with some ideas to stop him doing this!

I have seen photos of some piggies with open sores that needed protection, and who have had body stockings made out of a clean sock with the foot part cut out or made from tubigrip , with holes for their legs, so their heads and bottoms are unimpinged but their bodies are covered by the fabric making it more difficult to nibble at.
