i orignally started a thread for my gp Rose in the food section but thought this would be more relevent in health and illness section, she went back to the vets this morning after finishing her course of baytril, and i asked about the possibly of putting her onto Cystease and i showed her the diet plan from the planet guinea website. she said that both were worth a try and she gave me 5 tablets of Cystaid (which i assume is the same as Cystease), and told me it would be cheaper to get some Cystease off the internet (which i ordered this morning). So Rose is on half a tablet of Cystease/Cystaid a day.

I was just curious to see if anyone had any results using Cystease? and is half a tablet a day too much for her?

Rose certainly seems alot better, shes been pop corning and running around like a loon for the past 20 minutes :)) and ive seen her wee a couple of times this morning and she seems to be alot more comfortable :)

Wow, good to hear of such a receptive vet! I'm pleased for you and Rose. :)

I've no experience with Cystease or Cystaid myself, and I know the folks on Guinea Lynx (medical forum) are wary of any claims made to it, but I've heard plenty of success stories and definitely believe it's worth including in many cystitis/IC/stone treatments.

Do keep us updated!

I'd read on the forum that people had had sucess with Cystease so persuaded my vet to let us try it for Spike, we started him on it last night. She gave us 4 capsules and we give him 1/4 of the powder in a syringe with some water each day. The vet wasn't convinced it was going to do any good but said it won't hurt and you can't overdose and she didn't have any other suggestions.
So fingers crossed it works for both of our piggies. I'll let you know if there's any improvement.

I have started Nerys on cystease about three weeks ago and so far we haven't had another bout of interstitial cystitis yet.

After a week on 1/2 capsule once daily, she is now on 1/4 capsule per day as per recommendation of my vet.

I asked my vets for one of these little plastic bottles they use for meds. Usually, I empty 2 capsules into the bottle and mix them with 4ml of water. That gives me a supply for 8 days of 0.5ml of fluid to syringe daily. You need to shake the bottle before use. I keep it in the fridge.

Truffle has been on cystease since January - he has a full capsule a day for his IC. I wouldn't say it has cured him but it seems to have helped.
Gerty has just started it too as she has mild IC - she's been on a full capsule a day for 14 days but I've not noticed any improvement as yet.
Hope it does work for your piggy xx

I'm also another one who is trying cystease. Gizmo has 1/4 of a tablet daily and started the cystease a few days ago, he does seem a little better, but i do also syringe him water 3 times a day to increase his water intake.

I too have heard of alot of success stories and i guess every pig is different so only time will tell. :)

Darcy has been on cystaid since last November with no problems at all.He has half capsule daily in water,i draw up into 1ml syringe and just empty in side of mouth..he expert now.
Darcy has been completely symptom free following open bladder surgery in October last year,i believe Cystaid has been brill for him

Tallulah is on 1/4 a tablet a day and to be honest it hasnt helped too much. She has seen more improvement via Metacam - she is currently on no AB as she is having a urine culture soon.

Just thought i'd post an update on Rose, i haven't heard a peep out of her for nearly 3 days now. She seems to be back to her normal self and eating everything in sight! :)) i'm also giving her extra water via syringe, 15ml 3x a day to help keep her bladder flushed

will keep you updated as to how she gets on :)

Glad to hear that the cystease is working for you! Fingers crossed that it continues, it seems to be working here too! :)) Gizmo hasn't squeaked for 5 days!

I'm starting Sweetie on cystaid to see if that will help her shrug her UTI. I will post updates. Glad to hear that so many other forums users find it useful.

I'm very very interested to hear about everyones experiences with Cystease/Cystaid.

It seems like quite a few people here are currently using it, or have tried it recently, so updates would be fab please.

It'd be great to keep this thread going as it seems that Cystaid & Cystease are being used more and more in treating "bladder pigs".

Thanks :)

Cystaid is ace x

Hello
My 2 year old boar Darcy has been on cystaid since November last year.He had awful problems before then and had open bladder surgery. He made a good recovery with one set back and at that point was put on cystaid and since being on cystaid we have had no problems. He has a low calcium diet too as do all my piggies and i have had no problems up to yet with the other 20 :(|):(|)
I also had my lawn treated for clover as this is high in calcium and was they use to graze on it,its just lovely grass now.A little bit of clover is not a problem but my lawn was just made of it !
Hope all goes well for you if i can offer any other info

Nerys is still cystitis free and has been so since I started her on cystease. I can only recommend it!

That is fantastic news Wiebke, after such an awfully long time of cystitis trouble. Great news too about Darcy, Helen!

I am intending to start Nooshi on Cystease, however for her it is more of a 'preventative protective' measure. Nooshi has bladder grit, and although there are no symptoms other than gritty urine, I would like to administer the Cystease in an effort to protect her bladder against the potential inflammation caused by the grit.

Best of luck - I must admit that when I started with cystease I didn't think it would be such a big success; my initial aim was to simply relieve the bladder between the regular bouts Nerys was having.

Will reply to your PM tonight Susan, not forgotten you, just running round after a nutter of a puppy and the twins at the mo. rolleyes
