Squeeky Pete has cystitis, does anyone know of any fruits or veg that should be avoided so they dont aggrivate it? & does cranberry juice actually help? if so should it be diluted? any advice would be appreciated,
he's having medicine but is still uncomfortable.

i "think" citrus fruits/apple anything with a high acidity should be avoided. As for wether cranberry juice "works" ive no clue but i have given it before (unsweetened) but my piggy was on antibiotics for it so i credited his recovery to these rather than the cranberry juice.
I also frequently syringed water to help flush the infection thru'. I'm assuming Squeeky Pete is on antibiotics? :)

I agree with what has already been posted. Has Squeeky Pete been seen by a vet/given ABs? Septrin is considered the antibiotic of choice by most vets for UTI problems. I generally give unsweetened cranberry juice to pigs with bladder problems, like Nikki, I'm not sure if it works but it can't do any harm.

Another thing you can try is to boil up some pearl barley and offer the liquid (the cooked pearl barley can also be mixed in with their food) - be warned, it feels very "slimy" but that is the point, it coats the lining of the bladder, helping to stop irritation.

I would also increase his general fluid intake to try to flush things through. In addition to perhaps syringing some extra water/juice try making his veggies wet.

Hope the little guy feels better soon.

Thanks,
he's on Septrin & Norocarp, & extra water. I'll try the barley thing. I've been cutting back on greens as his wee was getting chalky (possibly the cause of the cystitis!) so he has been having more fruit lately, I'm sometimes not sure what to give him!
He does seem alot better today, the Septrin must be working.

Septrin is great, but I've not heard of Neocarp. I'm thinking it's an anti-inflammatory? I know Rimadyl is sometimes known as Carprofen so it may be another name of Rimadyl.

High calcium veg tend to irritate sensitive bladders. Carrots, kale, parsley and spinach are the worst of the usual bunch. Peppers and coriander are my staples, along with lettuce and cucumber. I have two sows who are/were prone to cystitis and there have been no chalky spots in the cage or irritated bladders since I altered the diet.

yes Carprofen is printed on it too, I believe it is an anti-inflammatory.

Yeah I agree with Niki, I think acidic fruits would probably make things worse.
