after never having a sick guinea, patch had a bout of hay fever. suddenly Pi is now sick. she swelled up over night. compleatley panicked it was bloat, and that the new bedding I got for Patch has made her sick.

so I rushed her in to the vet (brilliant vet receptionist, I said what was up, rang at 8:50, and they saw her by 9:20) vet took her in to do tests ( he let the girls stay together, so they wouldn't be as stressed.)
After warning me the costs ( I was a bit annoyed at the time thinking he was stating it was just a guinea pig, Realised once I left he was giving me an out if I couldn't afford the treatment.)
Pi has been shaved (now have a half skinny pig) and had x rays and scans, fortunately he was able to do this without GA, so that has reduced her risks. The vet showed me the xrays and talked through this mas in her body its about the size of a cherry tomato .

on the plus side the vet was laughing at Pi when I picked her up saying for a piggie that is blatantly so sick (she looks like she is at full term). she is still very happy, eating drinking and running around like a pup, she decided to go for a run when trying to get her out the recovery pen (this is normal her nick name is houdini.)
She has been given painkillers just incase she is in pain.
He has referred her to a specialist in G'pigs a Vet called Dan in Swindon. They are currently unsure what it is, thy think maybe cysts but maybe something else!
Am currently feeling like the worst guardian in the world,

Don't feel bad, these little furries are great at hiding illness so don't feel bad.

I hope your referral goes ok. Glad your vets were so good with her. : )

Good luck and do let us all know how you get on. I'd be really interested to what the vets find. Hope your little one is ok.

x.

Have an appointment with the specialist on tuesday , she is still running around like a little Minx. She is taking her medication and has been following me round the Kitchen. I have put a pic of her poor tummy on, She is a little bit high as she had just had her meds, lol

Love to your little girl. Please keep us updated on her. Well done for acting so quickly, lots of vibes to Pi x

A very interesting post. After losing one of mine to a sudden swelling that I thought may be bloat or gut distortion, I have found this an informative post. Sadly I didn't get time to get to vets it all happened so suddenly but she had been ill a few weeks previously and xray showed unknown dark areas. I hope you have a full recovery Pi. Sending lots of wheeks and hugs. Hope you inform us of the outcome.

After a stressful few days and a lot lighter wallet, we have our resaults.:yahoo:
Took pi to vets for refferal in swindon who were really good and after all this pi has trapped ,am very poor but very very relieved. Turns out it was my fault so feeling like a very bad guinnea guardian as I decided to buy what I thought was a better brand of food for her, turns out it wasn't so good and had a high sugar content. This fermented in her belly causing gas, my dad (who is looking after them at the moment) thinks the reason she is so chilled is that sugar plus fermentation fluids in belly = alcohol so she has been tipsy for a week, and we now are going to have to deal with a massive hangover, lol

Just a Lil note on The vets, arrived and as we were the only ones there got pi out for a cuddle as 1) she hates travelling and 2) was so scarred it would be our last. Pi was her normal monkey self, she got pets from another vet who we weren't seeing when She came to explain our vet was running late (as pi wasnt in pain and chilled, I didn't mind you never know what he was delaying with, and that fuzzy may be worse off). When he arrived the vet was really nice and wouldn't let me put pi on the table till he got a towel so she wouldn't get a chill. He took her off for another scan, and I heard him talking to her, which I liked, glad even the professionals chat with The fuzzys. When he brought her back from The scan and was talking us through The pic, he sat her on his lap so she could have another fuss. These little things really put my mind at rest. :luv:

Glad it's turned out to be a good outcome! Yay! Could you tell us what food it was please? Then we can stay clear :)

Hi it was gertys guinnea pig complete Muesli, it has dried fruit in it. I think that the sugar in the fruit is what pushed her sugar up.

Oh dear! I've seen that food before in Asda I think. I'll stay clear :)

It is also full of grains which are difficult for pigs to digest and can cause gas, bloating and an overload of Candida. That is the same with a lot of commercial foods though.

Hi Helen. Just reading here about foods with grain in. Have been advised to try oats and bran to help with weight gain of a poorly pig. Are these safe or classed as grain? Also trialling a new feed which looks terrific called Nature's Touch. I like the sound of all its ingredients, bar one, puffed wheat rice I think it is without finding the bag. Have you heard of it and is it good? My clan are tucking in to it with relish and sat waiting for TH next fill every time I go near!

Yeah I am staying clear, have been told by the vet as they are free graziers and have daily salad they don't need dry food for the summer this should help the bloat go down. Fingers crossed.

Hi, sorry I missed this.

I think if you are trying to help a pig gain weight all the other stuff goes out the window, but in a normal situation then it is best to limit grains where you can.

I have added the food to my list to look at properly. I can't find any calcium or protein ratios though. It has mollasses and soya in it which I tend to avoid too.

Oh, I thought molasses were good for them in small quantities and that its a preference of whether to feed wet or dry! Got that from my Peter Gurney book. Mine seem to love it. The little one that's been so poorly, Sasha, tucks into it with real relish!
Just got the bag out. The analytical constituents are: Crude protien13%. Crude oil and fats 2.9%. Crude fibres 19.5%. Crude ash 10.2%. Moisture 10%.
I must admit that I didn't like the fact it has soybean oil in it, but that, birch and cane molasses are the last three listed ingredients. So does that mean there is less of them than the others listed previous to them? I don't see any calcium listed. Hope this helps? And thank you for reply.

It could mean they are minimal but molasses is not good for pigs that have bladder issues, same as any sugars. There may just be no calcium listed, it would be worth emailing them but I can do that as part of my sticky preparation if needed.

Yes please if you would Helen, I'd find it extremely useful. Bit raw with emotion at moment. Just walked in to find little Aneka dead. That's 3 in 5 weeks. I just want to get it right for them. Nature's touch looks, smells and seems so much more appetising than the excel pellets, that mine seem only to eat if there's nothing else. Appreciate your help.

I will do, the thread is a bit of a work in progress at the moment though so may take a while. I have just noticed though, is it a muesli? I thought it was a pellet, my sticky will only cover pellets.

I'm so sorry, what a horrible shock.

Yes, well, I think so. Has beet pulp nettle hay and all sorts in it, much nicer than a dirty great brown unappetizing and unstimulating excel pellet. Though the dogs love those, if I ever spill any and they can get to them, they will. Even beg for them!
Sounds like you won't be covering it then, shame, as i'd be really interested to know.
Best of luck with the sticky. Helene.

I can still find out the information for my spreadsheet. We don't recommend feeding muesli though.

Ok. Will continue to mix with excel, look forward to the spreadsheet. I'm still quite new to forum and finding my way around a laptop tablet and internet stuff in general, so please don't laugh or think I'm daft, but where exactly will I find the spreadsheet info? I get a little confused with threads and sticky's and the like. Sure I'm missing loads of stuff and sometimes wanted to link up different articles I was in conversation with on here but I haven't a clue how to! Will keep getting better the more I use the site I hope. Cheers for now!
