My lot have at least half a carrot each (14 of them) about 5 times a week! Never done them any harm, same with the greens and cabbage! :)

Cucumber everyday mainly for my girls who don't drink and Tonni cos he loves it!

Think some people can be overly cautious :) I have been giving them the same for years and will carry on :)

Cucumber can be given daily because it is mostly water anyway. It is better to vary the veggies and not give any one thing daily.Alternate days is fine for most veg.All the ones you have mentioned are fine, but they also like,
melon
apple
pears
coriander
dill
corn cobs,with silk and leaves
spinach, but only once or twice a week.
kale
pak choi
celery Mary

Why should Spinach only be given once/twice a week? I am new to piggie feeding and don't want to get it wrong.....mine love spinach, basil, parsley, coriander, broccoli leaves (in preference to florets) and raspberries. They aren't keen on parsnips or strawberries.

I must say that I am actually eating more fruit/veg 'cos I buy a variety for the boys, but don't like to waste it, so eat is aswell!

Sounds fine to me Boureki.

I like the one grape per guinea!

I like to be generous ;D

Poor little starving baby ;D That would be funny if you led someone to believe that that's all your piggies get for breakfast hehe.

Clover's daily vege is mainly, greens or savoy cabbage, half a carrot or 2/3 baby carrots and some brocolli (she likes the stalk and dark green bit). For tea she some celery and cucumber (maybe has one earlier in the evening).

Maybe once a week she gets sweetcorn with the leaves on (as well as greens & carrot). She likes kale for a few days then goes off it, so i only give it now and then.

I have read somewhere that carrots shouldn't be fed everyday, but my old girl (passed away at 6yrs) and clover (nearly 7) have always had them daily

kay8469 I think spinach is very high is calcium and can cause bladder stones

I have not found any problem giving my pigs carrots every day.,and Peters pigs used to have carrots every evening. My pigs tend to go for the choicest veg first, and leave the carrots till last.,but I have 3 pigs who adore carrots and always eat them ffirst. Spinach should only be used as a treat because it contains a trace of oxyalic acid.I feed just a few leaves once or twice a week. Mary

My four have;

Breakfast;

Spring green - little bits torn up
Cauliflower - "
runner beans - chopped up ( one bean between the 4 of them)
carrot - one quarter

As I go out the door the have; slice of cucumber and loads of corn leaves and silks and the cob cut up 4 ways.

Tea;

Mixed lettuce leaves - little bits torn up
runner beans - as before
cucumber - chopped up
brocolli - chopped up
apple - tiny pieces

handful of parlsey at 8pm SHARP!

Pookie is 5 this year..................

I would not give the beans at all,and I would only give the lettuce as a treat 2 or 3 times a week. The other things are fine, but they could have bigger portions.I give my pigs a bowl of mixed veg each,3 to 4 times a day,and a cucumber treat before I go to bed.The diet should be 85% hay, grass fresh or dried or both, herbs and veggies. Mary

So far, for all of us here what we've been feeding our piggies has been ok for them - touch wood. O0 Naturally I give them hay, readigrass and dry food also as well as fresh grass and dandelions quite often as I work next to Wimbledon common, and YES! I wash the grass and dandelions before giving it to the piggies! (actually leave it in soak for the afternoon before I take it home!)

Guineapigvet::: Andy the vet we both go to doesn't like them having vegs - just grass and dandelions I had a lonnnnng discussion with him about it when I lost Rodney.

Crikey, if you give them 3-4 bowls of veg a day, I am now wondering if mine are being severely underfed! I read that we should only give a bowlful a day to prevent loose droppings etc, has this thinking now changed? Gawd, now I don't know what to think! :embarassed:

3-4 bowls ,whoa thats a lot :o >:( i would rather not give them that much even though it would be mixed i would still be worried about them having the poo's
and mine have decided they like beans and i dont give cabbage anymore due to bad experiences :(

It is loads! Mine get theirs once in the evening :)

Well, thats what we do, but I have read that several people give theirs lots more during the day. Perhaps it just depends on individual ownership?

Wow thats alot 3-4 bowls per day, mine get 2 cabbage leaf bowls a day. I wish I was in enough to give them that amount through out the day.
Out of interest where did you study to become a vet guineapigvet? I have an interview at the new Nottingham Vet school soon...

sure, it just seems a lot - don't want fatty pigs! ;)

lol, even though he's not a fatty, our eldest Blaze has got such a large bottom lolol ;D (aww we luv 'I'm... :smitten:)

Fat piggies rawk thats all I can say,so long as its not a serious health issue and they can live off their fat if theyre ill ;)

sooo cute n squishy

That seems a lot to me

My 8 Piggies have a constant supply of dry food in their feeders and hay once in am and then pm when they have 3 vitalite bowls full of veg

Mine are usually fed carrots, spring greens, spinach and broccoli occassionally cucumber i have to be careful cos i find it gives Sammy an upset tummy, also sprouts they love but have gone off cauliflower

I wont give them savoy cabbage after what happened to Buttercup but it may not be related i will never now

2 to 3 bowls a day is fine.I do not give mine a whacking great bowl ful. They get 3 different veggies at each meal, maybe quarter of a carrot, medium sprig of parsley and a large slice of cucumber. The next meal could be a large spring green leaf,a large slice of tomato and a couple of corn leaves. They do not always scoff the lot at once but return to the bowl later.Piggies are grazers so need to forage most of the time.
Piggy llover: I have had arguments with Andy over this vexed question. He has a bee in his bonnet about not giving veggies, only herbs and grass. In an ideal world yes this would be great.,but in reality herbs are expensive and not all that easy to get.,also parsley is high in calcium and I do not think it should be given everday. Some of my pigs will not eat coriander and some will not touch dill,.I do not agree with Andy that they should be given dandelion every day because it contains laxative and diuretic properties. It is great to have a vet so interested and caring about pigs but I do disagree on his diet views. Anne thinks more like I do that we have to use the veggies available.. Mary

I would just like to say that my pigs do not get soft pellets and they are not overweight.Piggies are not greedy animals and will not overeat. I have already explained in a previous post that I am not pretending to be a vet,the board name I chose was a silly mistake and I am going to re register under the name I use on Peters board. It is sad that some of you are choosing to ignore all I say.because I never suggest any thing that I have not used on my own pigs,or know has been used by other owners.I will not be messaging again under this name and may decide not to re register because frankly I do not like this board very much,I find it rather childish and silly. Mary

childish and silly?
because we all have diff views etc? theres nothing wrong in that.. and because we dont always agree with what Peter Gurney etc says then we're slapped down for it?! some people go on like hes a god,yes i agree he was good and had some good ideas but it doesnt mean we have to copy everything he says and have it rammed down our throats ::)
I'm sorry but you seemed to take it the wrong way and after all this board is here for everyone to help each other in one way or another
but calling us childish and silly is no better than what youre doing yourself
I dont think there was any need for that
