Hello all
I have discussed about little Daisy before on the forum, she has gone bit quiet and not her normal self. She is still eating and drinking but she use to drink loads and this has slowed down.Daisy is nearly 5 and i think its wasting disease, she is 658g now was 684 two weeks ago.Its not a parasite problem so i guess there is nothing else i can do right now except shower her with love and affection. She likes porridge oats and sweetcorn and is happy munching those.Any one else had this experience and what i can expect. Its really hard isnt it i lost Toffee three weeks ago.I hope Daisy has more time on her hands maybe its just me fretting.
I will add that Daisy was a rehomed piggie and is very tiny she has only ever been 900g whilst living with us and has lost her weight slowly over this time we have had her since May 2009 she is fiesty but oh so china doll dainty xx

Older guinea pigs do often lose weight and conditions slowly (not unlike old humans!), but they are usually staying perky. There can be an underlying illness, but unless you have clear signs it is pretty impossible to figure out what it is.

Perhaps this thread can help you?

It is always hard to cope with another piggy not being well after the traumatic demise of one of your piggies.

Aww, bless you and little Daisy. I'm sorry I can't offer any advice, but will be thinking of you both and hope Daisy gets stronger. xx:rose

Hi Helen

Sorry to hear daisy is wasting away :( - jules was like that and despite three trips to the vets and overnight stay and examination under Ga they still managed tomiss an abscess which has obviously stopped him from eating (he is 4.5yrs btw) wonder if it might be worth asking your vet to check this area out to rule anything like that out - Jules is in bthe safe hands of Laura-CCC4 along with Mo to try and get him back to full fitness which he is doing really well at so far x

Are you sure its not parasites?

One of my piggies had bad bloating, when it started his weight began to drop. I eliminated some food suspects, and the bloating settled down, and the weight went up, but after a few weeks the cycle started again. After 2 to 3 months of this Iggy could only tolerate hay, a tablespoon of pellets per day, porridge and tiny amounts of veg. The bloating had settled on this restricted diet, but his weight dropped to just under 600grams. By this point it had clearly gone beyond a bloating problem.

I used Ivermectin from my own stash, and took him to the vet for a wormer - just a couple of weeks ago. His weight has now gone up to 700 grams, the bloat has completely resolved itself, and he can eat everything, and lots of everything.

I didn't suspect parasites - non of my other 12 piggies had any symptoms, until about 3 weeks ago, when Odie developed a bald patch. Her weight remained stable and she had no eating problems, unlike Iggy, who didn't lose any hair. So their symptoms didn't match, and all the other piggies appear fine. But the parasite treatment is working really well for both of them, and the vet agrees its the most likely cause of the range of symptoms.

So from my own experience, its definately worth treating for parasites!

Hi all:)
Daisy has picked up and although still looking aged 5 ! is standing on the bars again waiting for food ! She has her heat pad in all the time with fleece so she is comfy, she went the vets for check up and had teeth looked at,she is ok and up to date with ivermectin etc so vet just says could be old age kicking in.She is eating so thats great, thanks for lovely messages
