Panda, is currently on 1/2 steroid daily and .4ml septrin twice a day. She is having regular check-ups at the vet (once a fortnight). She has lost about 200g in 6 weeks. The vet isn't too concerned because her general body condition is still good but we don't want her loosing any more. She weighs about 1240g(remaining constant for 6 days) at the moment. She's reluctant to eat her hard feed and doesn't eat her hay with as much enthusiasm as before although she can demolish a broccoli stem at speed. I'm wondering as to whether her mouth is a little bit sore and this is why she is reluctant to eat. Are there any indications as to whether the daktarin would interfere with the steroid? She is being topped up with critical care twice a day. Thanks

I am not overly familiar with the use of steroids but I know there can be issues when mixed with other medications so I would maybe check with your vet. Some vets are unhappy with the use of Daktarin oral gel though but I do know of some that are happy for it to be used. It is brilliant for oral fungal and also any systemic fungal issues and this could be why her mouth seems sore but best to get veterinary advice before using it as she is on steroids. Has she had her teeth checked too?

Thanks for the reply, she's having a check up tomorrow. I'll discuss it with the vet then. Although last time she went he did mention that the weight loss could also be down to the reduced dosage of the steroid.

What is she on the steroids & septrin for? Is the daktarin as cream or oral? Best to check with the vet if she is ok on steroid & daktarin together. Have you had her molars checked? Another cause of reduced appetite can be pain, either in the mouth or elsewhere. This is something to discuss with your vet though because, as I'm sure you know, use of steroids limits which pain meds can be given so don't treat for pain without discussing with vet first.

200g when looked at as a % of the starting body weight lost is 13% so definitely significant, good she's maintaining as you wouldn't want to drop any more.

Best wishes, shiny

She's on septrin and steroids for a persistent uri. She has suspected scar tissue on her lungs from a severe infection (about 3 yrs ago), the vet has also suggested asthma/allergy but because of her breathing, age and lungs we are reluctant to sedate her to do further tests. The daktarin would be the oral gel, I've used it before with a piggy whose teeth were cut too short and was reluctant to eat because of the pain.

Hope the vets goes well, just wanted to send some love to Panda. Let us know what they say.
