Anyone found anything similar that isn't over the counter? It's just that my Holly suffers with her mouth from time to time, and the Daktarin really helps. (Tooth problems were ruled out).

Last time I bought it I got served by the pharmacist and... oh it was awful! It must have been so obvious I was lying, and she was asking me so many questions about my fictitious child! :(:{ And you only get such a teeny tiny tube too.

:)), thats the reason I don't have busopan too scared of the chemist! What does Daktarin do? As in what would be the symptons if I needed it?

blame irritable bowl syndrome and bloating if they ask! not that i have got all my stuff yet need to set money aside to buy it all

I buy online usually, I'm uncomfortable lying to the pharmacists (and online pharmacist) but most of the meds that I buy for the pigs can so easily be given to the twins as well, so I have a backup story most of the time. I don't necessarily condone outright lying (although I know that strictly speaking I do, when I say "go to the chemist and don't say the med is for pigs"!).

Personally, if the pigs need something that's going to benefit - maybe even cure them - healthwise, then I'd rather risk it.

It's for that reason that I don't buy all the meds at once. I only buy a few one time (related meds if possible e.g. nurofen and gripe water) so it's easier to explain.

I do understand this but my concern, is you may give them something and it doesn't work or makes matters worse and your left explaining to the vet why you did it :(!

That's my issue really - if I had kids I could just say it was for one of them and the lie would be much...erm... smoother! :red

Will have to get it online I think - I really don't want to go through that again! I just wish there was something else I could use, or they sold a bigger tube.

In answer to the point about giving things to pigs that aren't for them, I don't think any of us really want to/feel entirely comfortable with it, but given how little medications are licensed for guinea pigs, all we'd get is a bottle of Baytril if we just went with that approach. :( Finding other medications has most definitely prolonged the lives of my particular pigs, and I expect it has for others too.

Yes, that's always a risk. I think one often worth taking though, depending on the circumstances.

in all likelyhood the medication may have been tested on guinea pigs (definitely other rodents) to get through the licensing process..... please don't shoot the messenger

Joanne, I was the same - believe it or not. Now I treat most medical problems at home with no need to see the vet/Vedra! I'm actually studying homoeopathy in the hope that it will open more avenues for owners - and it's much easier to explain to a vet that you have tried homoeopathic treatments instead of human remedies!

Haha! Lol! I hope you don't take that as an offence! I don't know what it is, but i'm sure i'll find out soon!

Oh I see, do you mean that my pharmacist experience was funny? Yeah, to be honest I was glad that I was on my own with no-one else in earshot! :))

My vet has actually reccomended (from time to time) that I use human medicines on my animals. I have used Daktarin, Nizoral and Canestan to treat fungal infections (Daktarin is the best) and I've also used Calpol, Osteocare, etc. My dogs have gripe water and piriton too.

Just thought I'd update my old thread. Weirdly, I have managed to order this from Amazon and not been asked any questions, despite it being a pharmacy only product! :{ Apparently it has been despatched, so I'm very confused!

Ooh, interesting, thanks for updating!

I've ordered up to three boxes at a time from an online pharmacy, questions asked of course. I've had a lot of dental work done recently. And terrible oral thrush too, would you believe it just keeps coming back? :))

Hah, yes, I have a whole story now about my oral thrush. :red:))

It's 3 boxes I'm expecting. So weird that they didn't ask any questions!
